We were cruise starved and booked our 37th short cruise from Port Canaveral. Purpose was to test conditions on cruise ships in covid era. We were both fully vaccinated but then MSC cruises sent us urgent notice that to board ship we must present negative covid results with either a negative RT-PCR test, negative NAAT or negative antigen test. All fully vaccinated guests must provide documentation of a The test must be taken no more than 2 days before arriving at the terminal. CVS & Walgreen said it takes 1-2 days to get results, so we were on edge. Luckily we got text links to results on night before so it all worked out. Kids 12 and under are exempt from these requirements.
This post will be helpful to those who are thinking about a cruise in near future. The ship has 4400 passenger capacity but had only about 1000 on board. Very unusual experience with no lines and no crowds.
Just like the old 50’s days!.....................
Thanks, that is very interesting. My wife has wanted to go on a cruise for decades. What would you guess the number of passengers compared to the capacity of the ship was? It looks from your pictures that it was not very crowded.
Ping!
I don’t see how the cruise outfits can survive with 1000 passengers on a 4400 passenger capacity ship.
But prices are still low, so enjoy the uncrowded cruises before they all go out of business.
I am sorry, by the time I looked through all of your pictures I forgot that you provided the attendance figures in your description.
Beautiful!
And now, I’m hungry.
Wow - that really sounds wonderful! Glad you enjoyed it!
1000 passenger is what we heard from the cruise director, on a 4400 capacity ship.
1000 passengers on a 4400 capacity ship.
Thank you for sharing those photos! I’ve never been on a cruise and no idea if I would enjoy it (single man age 62)
The food looks good.
You went from Port Canaveral to where?
I would assume 23% capacity isn’t very good for the cruise lines...
AS this unreported inflation ratchets up, the bread-and-circuses economy always takes the first hit; not surprised it was at 25% capacity. Looks like fun, and better than a crowded cruise!
Regarding the two day thing: Not worth the hassle.
And it reminds me of this:
A twist on an Abbot and Costello routine to expose a different kind of lunacy:
Bud: ‘You can’t come in here!’
Lou: ‘Why not?’
Bud: ‘Well because you’re unvaccinated.’
Lou: ‘But I’m not sick.’
Bud: ‘It doesn’t matter.’
Lou: ‘Well, why does that guy get to go in?’
Bud: ‘Because he’s vaccinated.’
Lou: ‘But he’s sick!’
Bud: ‘It’s alright. Everyone in here is vaccinated.’
Lou: ‘Wait a minute. Are you saying everyone in there is vaccinated?’
Bud: ‘Yes.’
Lou: ‘So then why can’t I go in there if everyone is vaccinated?’
Bud: ‘Because you’ll make them sick.’
Lou: ‘How will I make them sick if I’m NOT sick and they’re vaccinated.’
Bud: ‘Because you’re unvaccinated.’
Lou: ‘But they’re vaccinated.’
Bud: ‘But they can still get sick.’
Lou: ‘So what the heck does the vaccine do?’
Bud: ‘It vaccinates.’
Lou: ‘So vaccinated people can’t spread covid?’
Bud: ‘Oh no. They can spread covid just as easily as an unvaccinated person.’
Lou: ‘I don’t even know what I’m saying anymore. Look. I’m not sick.
Bud: ‘Ok.’
Lou: ‘And the guy you let in IS sick.’
Bud: ‘That’s right.’
Lou: ‘And everybody in there can still get sick even though they’re vaccinated.’
Bud: ‘Certainly.’
Lou: ‘So why can’t I go in again?’
Bud: ‘Because you’re unvaccinated.’
Lou: ‘I’m not asking who’s vaccinated or not!’
Bud: ‘I’m just telling you how it is.’
Lou: ‘Nevermind. I’ll just put on my mask.’
Bud: ‘That’s fine.’
Lou: ‘Now I can go in?’
Bud: ‘Absolutely not?’
Lou: ‘But I have a mask!’
Bud: ‘Doesn’t matter.’
Lou: ‘I was able to come in here yesterday with a mask.’
Bud: ‘I know.’
Lou: So why can’t I come in here today with a mask? ….If you say ‘because I’m unvaccinated’ again, I’ll break your arm.’
Bud: ‘Take it easy buddy.’
Lou: ‘So the mask is no good anymore.’
Bud: ‘No, it’s still good.’
Lou: ‘But I can’t come in?’
Bud: ‘Correct.’
Lou: ‘Why not?’
Bud: ‘Because you’re unvaccinated.’
Lou: ‘But the mask prevents the germs from getting out.’
Bud: ‘Yes, but people can still catch your germs.’
Lou: ‘But they’re all vaccinated.’
Bud: ‘Yes, but they can still get sick.’
Lou: ‘But I’m not sick!!’
Bud: ‘You can still get them sick.’
Lou: ‘So then masks don’t work!’
Bud: ‘Masks work quite well.’
Lou: ‘So how in the heck can I get vaccinated people sick if I’m not sick and masks work?’
Bud: ‘Third base.’
And...scene...
“The ship has 4400 passenger capacity but had only about 1000 on board.”
Just four of these ships could give our visitors from Haiti the cruise of a lifetime!
One day in Nassau, Bahamas, and another full day in a private island owned my MSC cruises. It was just a 3 day cruise total cost $582 + $72 tips. Booze extra.
So, any chance of taking a cruise if you refuse to get vaccinated and refuse to get tested?
Yeah - If you were cruising on a frickin' plague ship!
Regards,
It was 3 days of break from cooking, cleaning and every day chores. The hassle was not bad, since we both were full vaxxed 6 months ago. Just had to do a drive thru covid test at CVS which was no cost to us.
Some cruises actually stop in Port-au-Prince.
