Sir Walter Raleigh's Colony Vanished Over 400 Years Ago. Scientists Are Still Looking
NPR ^ | JOE HERNANDEZ | September 16, 2021

It's one of the nation's great mysteries: The first permanent colony of English settlers in what would become the U.S., founded in North Carolina in 1587 by Sir Walter Raleigh, disappeared three years later with virtually no trace.

Now, archaeologists hope a new search for the Lost Colony will unearth clues about what happened to 117 men, women and children who vanished and were never seen again.

The First Colony Foundation, a group of archaeologists, is partnering with the National Park Service for a series of digs beginning this week at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.

"This dig includes new ground that's never been tested archaeologically," Jami Lanier, a cultural resource manager and historian with the National Park Service, said in a statement. "So, it's very exciting to see what may be found."

Sir Walter Raleigh, a famed English explorer and among Queen Elizabeth I's favorite subjects, was tasked with establishing a colony on Roanoke Island as England was trying to expand its reach across the globe.

The expedition that would travel to the island on North Carolina's Outer Banks in 1587 ultimately formed the first permanent English settlement in North America. (The land was previously home to the Carolina Algonquian people.)

But three years later, when a resupply mission returned to Raleigh's colony, none of the previous inhabitants was there. The only clue to their disappearance was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a wall.

The dig occurring this week is focusing on a previous expedition to the area in 1585, when a group of military men and scientists scouted the land for Raleigh.

The search will occur on several sites, including a metallurgical and science workshop set up by Thomas Harriot and Joachim Gans just a few years before the permanent settlers arrived.

Archaeologists Catch Big Break In Disappearance Of Roanoke Island Colonists

Archaeologists will reexcavate sites where previous searches may have missed or misinterpreted soil changes called "features" to better understand what was there, according to the foundation. Some artifacts have already been discovered there, but scientists have also used ground-penetrating radar to identify new areas of interest.

Last year, the team of archaeologists found shards of pottery they believe may have been owned by members of Raleigh's colony.

The public is invited to watch the digs in person.

This thing was solved years ago .
The survivors merged with the closet Tribe they were friends with.
They aligned to ward off a hostile tribe in the area.

“ever tried to stand up in a hurricane ?”

No, but I’ve seen pallets flyin’ by like frisbees.

When I was out in micronesia before big storms the island I was on would try to strip off their coconuts off the trees.

I asked somebody why and they answered me a question; “have you ever been hit in the head with a 95 mile an hour coconut?”

The entire colony of the unvaxxed died of COVID-19 400 years ago. They didn’t even wear masks! THAT’s just how deadly this virus really is. It can travel centuries back in time and kill everybody without even leaving a trace!

“ Sir Walter Raleigh, a famed English explorer and among Queen Elizabeth I’s favorite subjects” until she had him beheaded.

Sorry, Queen Elizabeth was dead for 14 years when Raleigh got the chop. Even James I didn't want to do it, but the Spanish insisted.

Much of the area likely still holding evidence/artifacts from the colony leaving is currently a live-fire military training area. Searching for historical objects is ... discouraged.

Protestants were not allowed intermarriage with natives. If they did have marriage with locals, they were certainly cut off from their Protestant sect and left on their own.

English Protestants were forbidden to marry natives but French Catholics were allowed to take Indian wives.

The Saponi Indians appear as a mix of Anglo and Native.

In theory, Roanoke was not so much lost as it was mixed in with locals and outcast as a result. This is a possibility.

Yes. They use the scientific method.

But they are also mixed in with historians.

They are some of the most fascinating people one could ever meet.

I heard they were visiting the Anasazi.

If they were, it would have been quite a trek getting from Roanoke Island to Arizona, as Route 60 had yet to be built.

“The only clues left that gave any hint to the fate of the colonists of Roanoke was the word “Croatoan” carved into a fence post and the letters “CRO” carved into a tree. All of the buildings had been disassembled, so the people had not been forced to leave in a hurry. The colonists were instructed to carve a Maltese cross in a tree if they were compelled to leave against their will. There was no Maltese cross found at the site. White assumed, with all of these clues, that the colonists had moved to the nearby Croatoan Island, but bad weather prevented him and his men from going to look for them. His men wouldn’t go with him to look for the missing colonists, and they left the next day.”

The Lumbee are thought to be the descendants of the Lost Colony.

Everyone in America knew the story well into the 1940s as the birthday of Vrginia Dare - thought to have been taken into the Lumbee tribe - was celebrated even at the federal level.

Heather Locklear is a Lumbee tribal member - her family name is common in that tribe - and may represent the genetics passed down from the Lost Colony.
