Fighter jets practised landing on a highway in southern Taiwan on Wednesday as part of an annual live-fire military exercise that simulates defending the island against an invasion by China.
The drill, which was watched by President Tsai Ing-wen, is supposed to hone Taiwanese pilot skills if the island's airstrips are wiped out.
Wednesday's drill took place on one of five highways that have been deliberately built with long sections that can accommodate planes landing.
In June, 28 Chinese jets breached Taiwan's ADIZ in the largest single-day incursion. That came shortly after G7 leaders issued a landmark statement urging peace in the Taiwan Strait.

I remember when Ike was president. The democrats all trashed him as a “do nothing” president who only just played golf all the time. History tells a different story: the good ones make it look easy.

On June 29, 1956 when the system got started, civilized Americans road in cars. There were 168.9 million people.
Ike thought they could escape before the Russians’ bomb fallout killed them in the cities. Worth a try.
Americans “rode” in cars. Not “road.”

When I was stationed in Germany in mid 70s if you took the autobahn south through Frankfurt past Rhein Main AFB you noticed a a long stretch where it got wider with no no dividers or street lights.
As you drove into Switzerland you noticed steel plates in each lane which were to place cratering charges.
Yep, and some stretches of the internet have markings on the surfaces to facilitate landings. These have been there so many years that most Americans drive over them without wondering what they’re for.
I think that video predates Youtube.
Never formally discussed or planned for.
Yes, and in the 80’s we (A-10’s) would also practice landing and taking-off from the autobahn.
foolishness then
