Picture a press conference where spies in the field instead of today's sycophantic reporters were asking Joe Biden the Afghanistan questions.

“Freedom of the press is limited to those who own one.” – H. L. Mencken

“Presser” is media slang for press conference, in theory, an opportunity for political mandarins to keep the public informed. The difference between a Trump and Biden presser is astonishing, especially if there’s bad news on the front page.

President Trump was savaged daily by rude, often nasty reporters. President Biden, midst the ongoing Afghan crisis, is gifted with softballs from the same journalists. Adding insult to alibi, the press has COVID-19 and hurricane Ida as an excuse to avoid covering the unfolding disaster in South Asia.

Before Bidens’s big fail is consigned to Page Six, a group of erstwhile intelligence officers that I know have compiled a selection of questions for the president, questions that a pandering media might never ask. Call it a fantasy press conference.

Mister President: You have said on several occasions that the US “withdrawal” from Afghanistan would have been chaotic and humiliating no matter when it occurred.

Are you aware that the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989; on parade, flags flying, equipment intact, in broad daylight - without casualties or opposition.

Our spies have been wrong since Pearl Harbor. They've been useless since Abe Woodhull and the Culper Spy Ring.

Oh Lord, how close to the truth you are. Prior to 9/11, the only people hired by DIA were retired/former service members. But 9/11 caused a wholesale rush of positions that needed filling, so the current employees were rushed out to deployments while new collage age recruits were hired. The new recruits were all grad students, told the leadership exactly what they wanted to hear, got promoted and were soon in charge of the ones who did all the deployments.

Many of the current SES have one deployment (Green zone in IRQ or AFG) and multiple 'leadership' posts. But there are a whole host of old timers who have decide that the door is more inviting then to continue to work for these empty suits.

Yep I lived it. My branch in which I built with my bare hands, was filled with all retired combat veterans. I could not get the promoted because they were males and didn’t perform sexual favors. They were fire and forget weapons that needed no training because they knew what they were doing. They would never get promoted because everyone else was promoting the inexperienced college grads a full pay grade every year, so it would eat up all of the O&M money in the budget.

I had a good friend and female colleague that was horrified at the reality of super qualified men getting passed up in favor of airheads giving it up to anyone that wielded promotion and assignment power.
