I never watched Deadwood.
The final Season of Boardwalk Empire was simply horrific. They totally rushed it all. Likely the few ‘Stars’ were becoming impatient with the time commitments. Worst final Season ever.
Sopranos and Breaking Bad were by far the best that HBO has ever done. Well, Breaking Bad was not HBO, but it was still great.

That seemed to be the rule for multiyear TV series now !
Great couple of years, final year a train wreck.
I know. I guess they felt they had to end it with you know who killing you know who and with a moral lesson, but it was all botched and unsatisfying.
I disagree with some of your take. The last episode surely seemed rushed, but I loved the time spent on the back story that really filled in the gaps across the series. It brought more life to the character’s stories, and the casting of the younger versions of the actors was superb. The one who played Steve Buscemi’s character should have won an Emmy. I’ve never seen such a perfect adaptation of an actor — and Buscemi’s quirks are tough to replicate.
Not sure about that. Apparently some series shows now have contracts to do x seasons and they get to the last season and have to tie up all the loose ends. L O S T had the same problem and so did Mad Men. The quality of the final season definitely lacked and anybody could have guessed that young Tommy would eventually murder Nucky for killing his father years ago. The first four seasons covered 1920-25 then the final year tried to do everything from 1925-1931.
