NYPD cops in storm-ravaged Louisiana butcher local names
NY Post ^ | 5 Sept 2021 | Sam Raskin

A much-needed laugh: A pair of NYPD officers volunteering in Louisiana tried to pronounce some local city and parish names. It went about as well as you'd expect.

Gov. John Bel Edwards declared that the Big Apple cops “get a pass” for butchering enunciations of local locations — and expressed gratitude for their work — on Twitter.

Choo pit too’ lah.

Minor emphasis on 1st syllable, major emphasis on 3rd.

Grew up in Louisiana, lived 45 minutes from New Orleans for several years mid 80’s, I can even mimic cajun speak. Friend here just went to help his brother in LaPlace (la ploss’), which is about 15-20 minutes west of new orleans, his house was 3 miles east of the eye wall, 140 mph winds tore off half his roof. Friend went to bring water, gas, etc and help clean up. I won’t know more till monday. I lived a few minutes north of LaPlace in Gonzales.

The spelling can throw you, but it’s not hard to pronounce once you know a little about it.

Beaudreaux - boo dro (rhyme with you throw)

Breaux - bro

Thibodeau - tib’ uh doh

I can’t remember any others, there are more. Look up Justin Wilson sometime. Ya’ll gon laugh, I gawrontee yeah...

Manx people are not English, by definition.

And they have their own Gaelic language on top of that.

I actually wanted to name our son Aaron, the wife did not.

Therefore he is not an Aaron.

Looks like Wikipedia is giving the world the wrong pronunciation.

I grew up on the Pennsylvania, but spent 20 years deep in the heart of Cajun country (Lafayette Parish). Further south, there are some rural pockets where Cajun French still permeates the dialect. The French, "Oui," has become a nasally and casual, "waah."

There is a hilarious YouTube video of some Cajun 20-somethings laying the accent on really thick messing with an On Star agent. Search YouTube for Cajun OnStar. It's pretty funny.

Guy that works in our plant is, originally, from London.

Still has a heavy Cockney accent.

One day I said to him "You Brits have a funny way with the American language".

I can't repeat what he said, because I couldn't understand him, but he was quite emphatic about it.

—”Manx people are not English, by definition.”

He was the company’s Director of Marketing and preferred to keep it simple and his accent was very slight.

That and he wanted to be 100% American!
He only drove Cadillacs and purchased his clothes from the same shop where Mayor Daley shopped. $$$

Have you watched Clarkson’s Farm?
An English worker and I haven’t a clue as to a single word he says?
And yes I have my hearing aids fully implemented/Bluetooth...

An excellent show and more so if you are familiar with Clarkson /Top Gear/ Grand Tour.

You’d have a hard time driving a Cadillac on some of the Isle of Man’s roads.

The thing is that guy would have a hard time getting a white-collar job in London itself if he has a heavy cockney accent.

Now, let me get this straight, “a local Louisiana Butcher names NYPD Language Cops while being ravaged by a storm?”

Maybe, “NYPD cops storm local Louisiana butcher in ravage language names?”

Ah, er, “A storm butchered local NYPD cops in ravaged Louisiana?”

This is so important, it worries me.

If you can’t speak the language, you probably should not be trying to pOlice there.
I wonder how long before this backfires.
