A pilot program in Long Beach is teaching first responders how to recognize a person experiencing “agitated delirium,” and then having a trained paramedic administer a sedative to the person, in hopes of reducing the likelihood of using force to subdue them.
Body-cam video from last November shows LBPD trying to detain a man at a Metro Rail Station. The situation lasted for more than 30 minutes before the man jumped through a busted out train window toward officers.
It’s these types of situations, according to Police Chief Robert Luna, that instead of officers using excessive force, a fire paramedic came and sedated the man with a sedative known as Midazolam.
Nearly 1,000 Long Beach firefighters, police officers and about 60 dispatchers are now trained to recognize a person in a state of agitated delirium, whether through drug or alcohol us, mental illness or uncontrolled anger.
On the scene, only a trained paramedic can asses the person and administer Midazolam in these cases.

Well I could say plenty about the regulations that ‘prevent’ medical sedation with a patient or resident who harms others as well as themselves yet nothing could be done because of political regulations........these caused my sister, who I just buried, unbelievable suffering she should never have to had suffered. Even putting a wheel chair in the lock position was considered “excessive restraint””.....
I will never forgive the politicians who prevent the use of restraints. Not ever!

Now thats an idea. Have boozoka that shoots a big cloth tarp with chloroform over the perp(s).
We need the wonks at Livermore or DARPA to create a combo tranquilizer and taser dart.
Suggestion, encapsulate a couple of sleeping pills in colorful capsules then offer the suspect those as ‘uppers’ or ‘meth’ and a glass of tea you say is booze. After they doze off, take ‘em in and let ‘em sleep it off.

Also from your field and I like the idea. Because we don’t have time in these immediate situations to both protect the individual’s safety (and life) and that of the officers trained in police work.
Frankly, most sedatives (at correct dosage) have less long term potential side effects than the covid vaccines.
This is a smart way to keep the world safer yet respect someone suffering from mental illness (due to brain disorder OR drugs).
Good points. Perhaps lowering the dosage would give the officers some safety and time. The idea of mild sedation beats violent force used on someone who is sick and out of control.
You are saying that bullets are a better way to handle a “stranger” who is violently out of control?
Midazolam
Midazolam, sold under the brand name Versed, among others, is a benzodiazepine medication used for anesthesia, procedural sedation, trouble sleeping, and severe agitation. It works by inducing sleepiness, decreasing anxiety, and causing a loss of ability to create new memories.
I assure you that paranoid delirium patients are not open for medications. And no one is stupid enough to give medication to someone whose previous medication ingestion is unknown.
