Scientists from Osaka University used stem cells isolated from Wagyu cows to 3D-print a meat alternative containing muscle, fat, and blood vessels arranged to closely resemble conventional steaks. This work may help usher in a more sustainable future with widely available cultured meat. Wagyu can be literally translated into “Japanese cow,” and is famous around the globe for its high content of intramuscular fat, known as marbling or sashi. This marbling provides the beef its rich flavors and distinctive texture. However, the way cattle are raised today is often considered to be unsustainable in light of its outsized contribution to climate emissions. Currently, the available “cultured meat” alternatives only consist primarily of poorly organized muscle fiber cells that fail to reproduce the complex structure of real beef steaks.

NOT!
“Beef like”. These are not the burgers you’ve looking for.
Looks like a giant tumor.
Still not the real thing. No, you eat it first...then tell me if it’s worth the cost, and your digestion.
I am waiting for oak, walnut, beech, and maple. Just thinking ahead for the work shop.
Uh...no.
Why do people want fake meat anyway?
I’m not buying until they have a steak/mashed potato 3D combo printer on sale for Prime Day. I might spring a little more if it prints out good rolls though.
Only 5mm.
Small, but growing tumor.
If they can create a beef steak of near Wagyu quality beef. I’d say they would win the meat market.
I don’t think they have it though, and price matters.
I’m eating more chicken! MOOOOOOO!
You should try their 3D printed apple pie. It is to shred for!
Interesting but not ready for primetime.
I’ve never had Wagyu, but I see I could get a lb of Wagyu ground beef at Walmart for $4.99.
There are many suppliers of Wagyu from whom you can order online. If you do, be prepared to pay a price in the neighborhood of $300/lb.
It’s hard to find prime grade meat locally but a few years ago a butcher had prime steaks available. I went to have a look and they were definitely different than USDA choice beef. They looked like hunks of fat with meat scattered among them.
Most prime beef goes to restaurants, a good many of which could be considered fine dining. I can think of only two restaurants nearby that qualify. I’ve never been to either.
Why do people want fake meat anyway?
In time, it will be cheaper to make.
I’ll have the SPAM lamb, thank you.
Try the wagyu burgers!
They are some of the best, juciest, tasteful burgers you can get. Three patties for five bucks. I usually stock up when they have them.
It looks like a giant tumor because it is a giant tumor.
