WASHINGTON, Saturday, Aug. 31.

The Government has information to-night that Gen. BUTLER'S naval expedition proceeded as far as Cape Hatteras, where the forces were landed and the rebel batteries taken, and destroyed. No particulars have been received, but it is anticipated that the rebels could not have made much resistance, as they were not likely to have had a heavy body of men in that vicinity.

SECRETARY SEWARD RETURNED.

Secretary SEWARD returned to Washington this evening, bringing with him all the members of his family.

OTHER ARRIVALS.

Hon. CHRISTOPHER ROBINSON, our Minister to Peru, is now here awaiting instructions.

Hon. GEO. OPDYKE arrived here this morning.

GEN. ROSECRANS SAFE.

Advices received by the Department from Gen. ROSECRANS assure us of his confidence in his ability to maintain his position against any force the rebels will be likely to concentrate in his vicinity.

REBEL FLAG ON MUNSON's HILL.

A large secession flag has been raised by the rebels on Munson's Hill. It was visible with a glass, this afternoon, from the top of the shiphouse at the Navy-yard. A considerable cavalry force was also seen going through their evolutions.

VISIT TO THE NAVY-YARD.

The President and Secretary WELLES visited the Navy-yard last evening.

ANOTHER SEIZURE OF SHALL BOATS.

Another expedition from the Navy-yard left yesterday afternoon, to secure any additional small boats not seized between the city and Fort Washington. Thirteen were taken and brought to the Navy-yard.

ANOTHER DENIZEN OF FORT LAFAYETTE.

Lieut. W.H. WARD, late of the Macedonian, resigned his position several weeks since. He reached New-York on the store-ship Relief yesterday, and by order of the War Department, has been arrested and conveyed to Port Lafayette. He is a native of Virginia, but was appointed to the Navy from Ohio, of which State he is still a citizen.

Almost. The situations aren’t quite the same. At Bull Run we were defeated in a hard fought battle. In Afghanistan we just cut and run.
