WASHINGTON, Friday, Aug. 30.
A REBEL DEMONSTRATION
This morning the rebels made a demonstration in force, with three pieces of artillery, against our pickets stationed at Falls Cross Roads. After retiring a short distance, our troops returned the fire, and finally compelled the enemy to retire, when they resumed the possession of their former position. One man, a private in a Michigan regiment, was slightly wounded. In military circles it is believed that the present movements of the rebels has no significance other than to keep their men actively employed, to prevent demoralization and dissolution of their Army until they are prepared for a grand movement, or one is made against them.
The rebels still hold Munson's Hill, a short distance beyond Bailey's Crossroads. Two scouts from the New-York Thirty-seventh entered their camp unobserved, and made observations. They saw about 500 stand of arms stacked. They brought away with them a camp-kettle as a trophy. The rebels can be plainly seen from the Crossroads throwing up breastworks around the brow of the hill. Capt. WHIPPLE, of the engineers accompanied Mr. LOWE on his aerial reconnoisance yesterday. They observed nearly a thousand men at work throwing up entrenchments on Munson's Hill. Judging from the camps and smoke behind the hill, they think that the rebels are there assembled to the number of four to six regiments. Between Falls Church and Fairfax, a distance of seven miles, they concluded from the smoke arising that the enemy must be in large force. Another ascension was made to-day.
A contraband named ISAAC BENNETT, belonging to a Virginian residing near Fall's Church, came yesterday to our pickets, near Mount Olivet Church, and gave himself up. He was mounted on a splendid horse.
