Doctors are being offered training to improve their bedside manner after dozens of patients complained about being ‘fat-shamed’ by NHS staff.
Some took exception to being told that they were an unhealthy weight, needed to improve their diet or were too big to fit in scanners or have operations.
The Royal College of Physicians said healthcare workers ‘must not be afraid’ to raise the issue because of the ‘very severe risks’ of obesity but they should discuss it ‘sensitively’ and avoid ‘stigmatising language’.
NHS trusts received at least 63 formal complaints last year about the way staff spoke to fat patients, Freedom of Information requests reveal. But the true number is likely to be higher as some refused to disclose numbers.
One doctor at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust allegedly told a woman she was morbidly obese and it was her fault because of ‘the crap she eats’.
An employee at West Midlands Ambulance Service faced disciplinary proceedings after allegedly saying that a patient’s ‘boobs’ were ‘not much to look at if you can find them under all that fat’.
Rachel Power, of the Patients Association, said: ‘Talking about someone’s weight can be a sensitive subject and health professionals need to take great care when approaching it.
‘They do need to be able to give patients honest advice, including about the benefits of maintaining a healthy weight… but it is never acceptable for NHS staff to be rude.’
Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said: ‘A lot of people are in denial about their weight and doctors should not shy away from telling them home truths.
‘Some healthcare workers may need to improve their bedside manner but there will be some patients who take offence at being told they are overweight no matter how sensitively it is done.’

You can’t help but LOL at this garbage, telling people they are fat and it’s killing them is now outlawed....
If a patient can’t withstand ‘your boobs’ were ‘not much to look at if you can find them under all that fat’, what kind of snowflake are they..
those two are some picky eaters, no?
So that’s where we are. Doctors cannot honestly communicate to a patient the state of their health, because of political concerns.
Make of that what you will, but this is about more than just fat shaming.
You’re absolutely right, it’s so insane I just shake my head and laugh....
Any mention of the “J” word? Have to think Jab Shaming is of more concern to many.
They're on the sea food diet.
If they sea food, they eat it.
Note to overweight Brits; You’ll wish they were just using the f-word when they start denting you care because you’re fat...

The Daily Mail kicked her to the curb in late 2017.
Interesting timing, wasn’t it...
Yeah - I was thinking the “F-word” was “are you Faucinatted?”
I had to see a doc several months ago. He gave me a hard time for not being vaccinated. “But yeah - freedom. ‘Merica! And we all have to wear masks for another year. Whatever.”
I almost got up and walked out, but figured he would bill me anyway and I wouldn’t get my ailments figured out.
I told the nurse what an ass he was.
“Oh - that’s just terrible. What you decide to do is your own choice. I’m not vaccinated either! But he doesn’t need to know that!”
Never mind that obesity, beyond being a general strain on any human body, is a prime factor in Covid morbidity; doctor’s are not supposed to shame anyone; because feelings, as defined by the Twitte mob, are more important than actual facts. But it’s perfectly alright to shame and in fact threaten the livelihood of anyone who is hesitant to be vaccinated. The medical profession is sick and it’s killing people.
They have slow metabolism.... And fast forks!
It started here with ‘though shall not shame a black woman’ — many of whom are overweight. That and MTV with those black women shaking their booty like they dancin on a cop car. After the MTV craze, white girls started gaining extra weight on purposes so that “baby got back” would apply to them. Somewhere along the way, there was a mass campaign against “fat shaming”.
Now all I see is fat people. Seems like hollywood is vacuuming up everyone who’s not fat. The same hollywood who led the no fat shaming campaign.
Doctor: “You’re too fat.”
Patient: “I want a second opinion.”
Doctor: “OK, you’re ugly, too.”
Seems to be a simple solution. On admission, the patient checks the box for treatment by a doctor or treatment by a politician. Those who check "politician" are transported to city hall.
A guy goes into his doc’s office for an exam. The doc examines him and says, “You’re fat. Lose weight.” The guy gets mad and says, “I want a second opinion.” The doc says, “Ok, you’re ugly, too.”
