Olivia Rodrigo knows the impact she has on fans of color, revealing in a new Q&A that she herself once believed only white girls could be recognized as true pop stars.
When “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang asked the “Brutal” singer how her Filipino American background factors into how she approaches her career, she said it’s “something incredible to think about.”
“I sometimes get DMs from little girls being like, ‘I’ve never seen someone who looked like me in your position.’ And I’m literally going to cry, like, just thinking about it,” Rodrigo, 18, said in the V Magazine feature.
“I feel like I grew up never seeing that. Also, it was always like, ‘Pop star,’ that’s a white girl.”

Fontella Bass
Tammi Terrell
Mary Wells
The Crystals
The Ronettes
Tina Turner?!!!!
She looks “white” to me.
Don’t you dare forget Gladys and the Pips.
Not to mention Mary Wells.
Salena? K pop? J pop? Rhianna. Beyonce? Yep... No women of color in pop music ever.
You could fill up a book with any number of examples.
It’s all about them. It doesn’t matter who did before. They think and will tell you they did it first. By themselves. No help. In the snow/rain/scorching heat. Uphill both ways.
Diahann Carroll
THANK YOU!!!!! That was who I thought of immediately! And how about my other fave - Gladys Knight?
“You know her, the younger girl on One Day @ A Time.”
You can watch Valarie today, she has a show on Food TV. It’s an OK show. I learned from watching it that her mother is from England! She made a classic English supper once for her mom. There was peas, and maybe a trifle, but can’t remember the main dish!
Yep...and Tammi Terrell.
They were the first I knew of...
My first LP
Baby Love
Stop in the Name of Love
Where Did Our Love Go?
Come See About Me
My World is Empty Without You
You Keep Me Hanging On
I Hear a Symphony
etc
Look at those hit songs! Every one a keeper for all time. The Supremes were and are one of the greatest girl groups of all time. Arguably the greatest, I’d venture.
Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding ???
The one time I was able to watch that cooking show with Valerie as host, she seemed surprisingly nervous.
Maybe it was just during the first season.
Could be. I only know Salinga because her break-out role was in Miss Saigon, then played Eponine in Les Mis and was the singing voice in Disney’s Mulan and Aladdin. She also played Fantine in the 25th Anniversary concert of Les Mis. Her portrayal of Eponine in the 10th Anniversary Dream cast of Les Mis is incredible.
And how can you forget Arnel Pineda, frontman for Journey?
Have you heard of ANY of the singers on that list?
I seem to remember listening to Pebbles, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, Vanessa Williams, CeCe Winans, Janet Jackson, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Sade, and Jody Watley as a kid (I had a crush on Jody Watley).
This person believes that history began at her birth, and she still doesn’t even know that much about it.
Mestiza borderline castiza. Person of color? Barely and she is paler in appearance than I. At least Sandy Cortez has African ancestry.
