I was expecting a BOOM with that sideways launch. Interesting. Astra has steering motors? See no other way for that to have worked. Was that on purpose?

I agree with Astra, that the control system actually worked perfectly, to save the launch. One of the main engines failed, causing the rocket to tilt. It would have actually done a power flip, but the control system corrected for the failed engine and righted the rocket. It then proceeded to lift, but slowly because of the failed engine. It failed to reach a proper orbit as well.

Yeah, if you watch closely something broke off the rocket at Max Q and then they terminated the flight.

The guy that wrote the stability program earned his pay with that performance.

Millennials version of SpaceX...doing things with a rocket that you never thought you'd see.

Wait... was it expected to slide horizontally like that during takeoff?

The CEO of Astra looks like a teenager who is proud to announce the launch of some fireworks he put together.

Yes, I think that’s part of the hiring criteria. And of course, blowing smoke.

A real life example of a project “going sideways”.

I’m assuming they were attempting a polar orbit from Kodiak Island?

“””I’m assuming they were attempting a polar orbit from Kodiak Island?”””

It seemed the rocket was flying over a lot of land before the rocket was intentionally aborted.

Where did all the debris fall?

Aren’t most rockets launched over water so the debris field will not hit somebody????

I thought they liked to launch rockets/spacecraft as close to the Equator as possible because the spin of the Earth itself can help give it a push?

This was launched from Kodiak Island, Alaska! I hope no bears were harmed.

They were lucky that specific engine failed, it would have been different had the rocked drifted inland.

In general, launches from Florida are for equitorial orbits and they launch to the east to take advantage of earth’s rotation. Launches from west coast, are for polar orbits. Vandenberg and Pt Mugu also do ICBM test flights that launch west into the Western Test Range.

For a polar orbit, it's best to launch far north.
