Some Pittsburgh residents may have been wondering why some stars in the night sky have been more difficult to see in recent years. Or why evenings seem less tranquil than they used to?
It could be that excessive use of artificial light, called light pollution, is adversely affecting the health of people in the Pittsburgh area.
Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto is attempting to do something about it.
On Tuesday the mayor announced a new “Dark Sky Lighting” ordinance for all city parks, facilities and street lights. The term refers to the use of technology to minimize the use of outdoor lighting to only what is necessary for comfort and safety.
The ordinance was presented to City Council on Tuesday and will be discussed at another meeting next Wednesday. It will likely come up for a vote on Sept. 7.
Under the ordinance, the city will follow “Dark Sky principles” for its newly installed or retrofitted streetlights, newly constructed and renovated park spaces and playgrounds as well as newly constructed and renovated city-owned buildings.
“By introducing Dark Sky legislation, the city is further advancing its commitment to reduction of energy consumption, and elimination of waste in accordance with our Climate Action Plan goals,” said Peduto at a news conference held at the National Aviary. “Our park spaces and city facilities should serve as the model for others to follow.”

With crime on the rise, I’m sure turning of the lights in city parks will help.
Oh good God do they ever stop, do they EVER stop with the complaining? Light pollution? How about leftist pollution? I’m getting sick of leftists inventing things to be offended about
duh, you live in the city, wanna see the sky? move to Montana, but not Butte.
Yeah, that’s the Burgh’s biggest problem...
It’s ironic, the most lit up major cities with the most lights, always have the most crime.
Back in the mid70’s the rural small town on a bay I was living in had an influx of Al Bundys’ who had sold their Cali home for $400K which was just huge money then and demanded the town turn the lights out at 10PM so they could see the stars,
As long as it doesn’t increase costs. Why not do something that looks nice?
One town I lived in - Chelsea MA replaced their street lights with LED lights and had a 5 year payback time with the energy saved. Big win IMHO.
This allows them to blame it on "light pollution" as though the observatories clustered in Pittsburgh...oh wait, there are none.
It's just like "Defund the Police". The city is bankrupt and needs to cut costs. Blame the residents, saying it's something they want.
i read that as “mayor Bill Pendejo.”
The airport is a good ways west of the city, and anybody flying into Pittsburgh has a little drive through unexciting vistas until they go through that tunnel and suddenly see the entire city laid out upon exiting. At night the view is spectacular.
I have to imagine that an overwhelming number of people with positive first impressions of the city had them precisely because of that view of the city and the lights at night.
The lights are not the biggest problem, it’s the fixtures which allow the light to scatter upward into the atmosphere. Instead of directing the light downward where it’s most needed, most lights do not have simple cheap cut-off shields which block the light from shinning upwards.
This is why in the regions of big cities the night sky is all but completely washed out. With common sense fixtures, much of this light scatter can be eliminated.
Al Bundy did not have any money. The guy sold 👠. If you had said Al Gore types it may have been logical.
What I’m thinking! Let’s turn down lightning in the inner city so thugs can see the stars. Brilliant.
Just do a Marxist Green ND cutoff of all electricity.
Problem solved...
Uh, Montana is a horrible place.
Militias everywhere.
Don’t even think of moving there.
The Left is constantly outraged, often by the circumstances it once promoted.
Butte is a ‘Rat City of Unions...
RE: Light pollution
Solution. Bring back the light bulb.
