I remember hearing something about a questionnaire (obama’s ebime?) and most soldiers wouldn’t shoot civilians upon command.
Times seem to have changed. This is why Swalwell seemed so confident to mention nukes and weaponry against civilians.

The military is full of these martinets. It’s crucial that NCO’s be able to motivate troops to act against their self-interest, at times. You don’t want people thinking too hard about whether or not they want to storm an armed position.
I was on Shore Patrol in Naples back in the mid-late Seventies, and was patrolling up around Via Roma. That area was off limits, so we had to patrol it looking for sailors.
It was me and a 1st Class named Cook who had the nickname "Cookieman" (Who also happened to be my boss and probably 20 years my senior) and we got chased by an irate transvestite with a knife!
As we walked along, this transvestite comes at us, wearing some black plastic raincoat (guy looked a bit like Alice Cooper!) He is brandishing a knife, waving it in the air, yelling something in Italian as he staggered towards us. (IIRC, it looked more like a kitchen paring knife than a carving knife!)
I just stood there with my mouth open, and as I looked at Cookieman, he just turned about and ran, so I turned and ran too. I have no idea what it was pissed off about, but it was screaming something at us in Italian. So we ran for a block or two laughing as we ran, then stopped to catch our breath.
While we were standing there, Cookieman, who was in his late forties, had his hands on his knees, bent double, panting, and he twisted his head and looked at me with a big grin and said :
"She looked like Grandma but talked like Grandpa..."
I laugh at that to this day...
