I'm not an expert on these savages but it seems the Taliban just want all the “westerners” out of the country. It's the ISIS carrying out the attacks, they likely have few “people” over there, no access to heavy stuff (hence the suicide attacks) and generally are the competitor/enemy of the Tally dudes. Taliban are barbarians but this time they want to get some sort of international recognition as the official gov of Afghanistan so they try to appear “moderate” at lest until foreigners are gone. If Taliban wanted to kill people at the airport, then indeed they could do that easily using just several medium mortars.
It is not hard to predict. I see more horror and America flushed down the toilet. The media will be orgasmic.

They are in a bad place to set up a defense (and don’t have the man power to create a parameter around the airfield. There is little or no cover in an airport. Last they are surrounded not only by the enemy but by civilians.
The Taliban do not need to attack, they just need to prevent supplies and re-enforcement. Further they could push thousands of civilians towards our troops.
This is more Market Garden then the Battle of the Bulge and with no Patton coming to the rescue.

‘Disaster on Every Level’ As Biden Closes Kabul Airport and Orders Commercial Airlines to Aid the Evacuation

The administration has activated a little-known law that would give the government the power to order civilian airlines to supply them with airlift capability.
The Department of Defense will compel commercial airlines to help with the evacuation of Afghans and U.S. personnel from Afghanistan, the third time that the U.S. has activated what is known as the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF).
Eighteen aircraft will be used, including 3 from American Airlines, 3 from Delta Air Lines, 3 from Atlas Air, 3 from Omni Air, 2 from Hawaiian Airlines and 4 from United Airlines. The planes will not be going to Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a statement, but will transport people from “temporary safe havens and interim staging bases

We were surrounded and in some fierce fire fights at times but we had two thing going for us. Free fire zone and air support. Neither is available to those troops at the air port.
If help was on its way perhaps but so far Democrats have been willing to sacrifice our troops when push comes to shove.
Maybe the full 82nd and 173rd are on their way but for now it does not look like any help is available.
What is the range of our attack helicopters? Do we have refueling helicopters where we could refuel on a flat surface?
