People who get migraines are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, while some people who develop diabetes become less prone to migraines. Today, scientists studying the link between these conditions report how the peptides that cause migraine pain can influence production of insulin in mice, possibly by regulating the amount of secreted insulin or by increasing the number of pancreatic cells that produce it.
The link between the two diseases isn't obvious: "Migraines happen in the brain, while diabetes is associated with the pancreas, and these organs are far from each other," says Thanh Do, Ph.D., the project's principal investigator. His group became interested in the subject after a number of papers described an inverse relationship between the conditions.
Researchers already knew that two peptides in the nervous system—calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP)—play a major role in causing the pain of migraines. These same peptides, along with the related peptide amylin, are also found in the pancreas. There, they influence release of insulin from beta cells.
Because of their role in migraine and diabetes, CGRP and PACAP offer targets for therapies that could treat either of these conditions. Migraine drugs that interfere with CGRP and its cellular receptors recently went on the market, and other treatments are being studied.
"Despite these positive results, you can't inject CGRP and PACAP into the body as therapeutic strategies for diabetes because these peptides cause migraine pain," Do says.
Because CGRP and PACAP can seemingly protect against diabetes, Do and others worry that the anti-CGRP and anti-PACAP treatments under development or already on the market for migraine could have the unintended consequence of increasing the risk of diabetes. In addition, these peptides are involved in numerous other beneficial functions in the body, such as blood vessel dilation.

I’ll take a pass on both.
I have heard of Headaches before, not really sure what they are, the only time my head ever hurts is when I bump it on something
I know folks with both.
Guess they didn’t get the memo.
to take one’s mind off the pain of the migraines, just rub salt in one’s eyes- you will soon forget about the migraine,
Who’d-a thunk it?
Me, I’m a MINO (migraine in name only). Never had one and don’t mean to make light of it. It’s a play on “it goes against my grain” — and there’s been too much of that in the 23 years I’ve had that handle.
About all my life I have had mild to severe headaches. Sometimes I think some are mild seizures so I should be diabetes proof if that’s the case.
Given the sheer amount of junk food and sodas I used to go through at a few times in my life, I should have been diabetic.
Even through the cleaner and healthier diet paths and weight loss that come with it, some days I could barely see straight until the pain cleared.
I’ve made some progress here and there on some triggers and treatments but never a true hammer type blow.
This is what passes for science these days. Idiots can’t tell correlation from causation.
My migraines do nothing to help my diabetes.
Is this what passes for “science” these days?
I used to have migraines and I used to have diabetes. If I had to choose, I’d take the diabetes.
Just my story, but I had migraine headaches for mostly my 20-50’s, decreasing quite a bit after menopause. One thing I noticed was that a full day following a migraine of intense pain and much vomiting, I felt really great, hard to describe. Energetic, clearheaded, just really good. It was like a purge of toxins or something.
Anyone else?
Well, I suppose if you are in the middle of a whopping big headache, you might not want to eat. Did I guess correctly?
I don’t have diabeetus (H.T. Wilford Brimley) but I use to get horrible migraines. Two drags on a THC marijuana vape pen stops them in minutes for me. I’ll take my chances.
Imagine a really bad sinus infection headache with motion sickness.
I have only get one migraine a year. They are light induced. I almost always wear polarized sun glasses. I use to get them monthly when we still used old school CRT computer monitors combined with tube style fluorescent lights. One thing that is the “hammer blow” for me when I get the aura is a couple drags off a marijuana vape pen. I don’t use THC recreationally but thank God it is legal where I am now. It wiped them out in minutes for me and was the only thing that helped. TOKE UP MAN!!!
I’ll mention it at the next neurologist appointment.
Coming soon.
At times I’m desperate to try anything legal and medically OK.
I’ve never taken any kind of illicit drug in my life.
The drugs used to treat migraines and nerve pains are way more damaging to the system then small amounts of THC. I think it is definitely worth a shot. Our bodies have cannabinoid receptors in our neurons so they were put there for something.
Good luck.

I know most medicines are varying degrees of poison.
Mine go from sometimes a light buzz feeling to my head feeling like it’s a bag of wet cement. Pretty much the only thing I’ve found is to sleep it off in a dark space.

Type 2 diabetes is not associated with the pancreas. Duh
Yeah, your head hurts so bad you can’t finish off that gallon of chocolate ice cream.
And I have type 2 diabetes.
