Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road
This is a pretty decent song.
I was driving to the Westport, CT train station this morning to go to Manhattan and I saw a live skunk in the middle of Route 136 in the Easton area.
On the way back home earlier this evening, I did not see the skunk but I did detect the smell. Somebody (not me) went ahead and ran the poor thing over.
I am dedicating this thread to that skunk.
I wore that 45 out.
50s was the time for novelty records
The Railroad Runs Through The Middle of The House
Flying Saucer pts 1&2
Does Your ChewingGum Lose It’s Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight
Purple People Eater
Witch Doctor
Transfusion
Mr. Custer
Mule skinner Blues
Black Denim Trousers (and motorcycle boots)
That’s off the top of my head...There are more.
I read Charlie Daniels autobiography a while back. I was hoping to read that Uneasy Rider was based on an actual event but sadly he referred to it simply as a novelty song.
Bummer.
They’re coming to take me away ha ha.
Ahhhh Doctor Demento.
The Cockroach that Ate Cincinnati
Transfusion is a classic!
Also...
The Streak
Convoy

I loved that song growing up!
That was the 60s...when life was beautiful all the time.......
i think a dead skunk must have just walked past our house- We have an ‘all house fan’ which draws air from outside, through house, up into attic- and really cools house off fast- only problem is, when a skunk is nearby- wow!
Last time I was in Vegas on Fremont Street it smelled like a herd of skunks got hit by a semi. But I don’t think there were any skunks. ;-)
lmao
On a road trip with my 20-something daughter and the dead skunk song came to mind for obvious reasons.
I think that led to the song about “My plastic Jesus on the dashboard of my car”, and later on the epic “Alice’s Restaurant”. She got a kick out of all of them.
Most of them got "extended" airplay thanks to Dr. Demento. Spent many Sunday nights in college listening to the good Dr., hearing the best of Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, Monty Python, and other "Deeeeee-mented" stars. IIRC, Dr. Demento was responsible for the discovery of Weird Al Yankovic.
I saw this guy back when I was in high school in 78 at a benefit with a lot of comedians, hosted by Steve Martin.
He pretty much got booed off the stage.
When he said this is my last song everyone cheered.
So he said he’s going to do two more songs.
Saw him at The Ark in Ann Arbor in 1972. Had forgotten all about that. Everybody left singing “Dead Skunk...”
I remember listening to that as a kid on my dads AM radio in the car. Now I have it on CD. I was trying to go to bed early but I just spent an hour listening to oldies on YouTube.
