Professor specializing in black feminist ‘ghosts’ opposes prison tours because it makes inmates feel ‘embarrassed’

A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth criminology professor who once authored an academic paper on “Black Feminist Hauntology” said she believes students should not be allowed to take field trips to prisons as it might “harm” prisoners.

The College Fix recently acquired a recording of an online seminar attended by academics throughout the nation in which Viviane Saleh-Hanna said she had recently been involved in a debate about whether students should be allowed to go on prison tours “as an educational thing.”

“Many of us took the stand that said no, that’s really harmful to prisoners, to be looked at like animals in a zoo kind of visit, that really hurts them,” Saleh-Hanna said at the June meeting. “So does educating students allow us to hurt prisoners in this way?”

The phrase you’re looking for is “No thanks, I’m full”

I’m going to swim against the current and say that a paper on “Black Feminist Hauntology” sounds more interesting than a lot of what comes out of academia. How does this subject not already have a show on Discovery? Partly sarcasm.

As I look at her photo, and as she wrote “like looking at animals in a zoo”, I chuckle at the irony.

Millenial-is this all you millennials have time for?

I say field trips for young thugs to see what’s in store for them. Prisoners can do cat calls: “fresh meat!” or “I hope you enjoy anal sex” “How about interracial sex?”

I’m wondering how angry this ‘academic’ will be if she discovers that black feminist ghosts will be white. Or, maybe the point of Black Feminist Hauntology is to prove that black feminist ghosts are black?

Black Feminist Hauntology passes as creditable academic work. I think everyone whoever called into Art Bells show should be given an honorary PhD.

Do you need to witness a murder to be educated about it? I don’t think so.

There are many things I can think of where I’d strongly disagree with the professor, but no matter HER motivations, I would agree that “education” does not require giving students “field trips” to prisons. There are plenty of ways that videos of prisons and their conditions can do that.

Remember the good ol days when a village would have a public shaming. It was my understanding they were quite effective until they started going too far. They probably wouldn’t work today because democrats would either throw a parade celebrating the infraction, or would rape any children held in stocks

These questions are why this is an important area of academic to inquiry. “White as a ghost” is obviously an expression of systemic racism. There’s a lot to unpack.

They exhibits inmates wouldn't be in cages if they weren't animals. Although I don't think visitors should be limited to just students. It should be open to all, and admission charged. The funds could go toward prison maintenance. Taking an elementary school on field trip, might "scare straight" some of the homies in training.
