... 2016 AJ193, will fly past our planet on August 21 at around 11:10 a.m. EDT.
When it does so, it will be traveling at a speed of around 26.1 kilometers every second...
NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) estimates that 2016 AJ193 is about 4,500 feet in diameter, but there is an uncertainty of about 1,300 feet either side of that figure.
As a result, 2016 AJ193 could potentially be as big as 5,800 feet across, though it could also be significantly smaller. The Empire State Building, by comparison, is around 1,250 feet tall.
While Saturday's pass is deemed a close approach by CNEOS, 2016 AJ193 will actually pass our planet at a distance nearly nine times further away from us than the moon is.
It will then shoot back off into space on its highly elliptical orbit around the sun. The asteroid makes one orbit around the sun roughly every six years.
CNEOS states on its website that "the threat to any one person from auto accidents, disease, other natural disasters and a variety of other problems is much higher than the threat from NEOs (Near Earth Objects)."

Of only passing interest. If we DID sustain a hit of this size, most of the other problems in the world would be instantly diminished.
But (sigh), just have to wait until next time. Missed the brass ring again...
The dinosaur killer was the size of Everest. This is between a Chelyabinsk and a Tunguska.

Come on, asteroid!
Washington DC? We can pray!

9 * 238,900 = 2,150,100 miles
Has anyone saw Bruce Willis lately?
When they find one that will pass within 75 feet of the Earth, then I'll be concerned.
I recall a few years ago they discovered an asteroid that passed within half the distance of the moon or something. Pretty close.
Sad part is, they only discovered it AFTER it had passed by the Earth. “The sun was in my eyes!”
Not that it would made much of a difference if we had seen it earlier.
He’s with Ben Affleck and Owen Wilson…
The Earth needs a restart.
News Week hyped the size but failed to give the weight in tons. The article also failed to list the size in boxcars.
Most importantly, it did not say how far away it will pass
Just in case give your loved ones a tight hug and tell them you love them as much as you can by noon Saturday. Also give thanks to God for having an opportunity to have been one of those souls who got to live and experience life on this earth. It won’t surprise you or sting so much in that instant you see a huge flash and following concussion.
Be nice if Washington DC is ground zero.
Why can’t we get a nice asteroid hit on Washington DC? This country deserves to be destroyed, as do most of the nations of the world.
