Then he had to turnaround and send troops back into the Kabul to handle the mess that he created?
You don't have to be a rocket scientist or military expert to realize that is the stupidest decision ever. Why would he do that?
If he is that far gone brain wise, his military commanders should have nixed the idea and if they couldn't get him to back down, announce their resignations. Otherwise, the entire bunch look incredibly incompetent.

The fact they did not immediately go back and retake and secure Bagram and secure a large perimeter as soon as tallys took Kabul shows their total incompetence in thinking of sending 6,000 troop to the Kabul airport trapping them in a box with no defensible perimeter was a good move. This admin has lost all Military leadership.

The situation is this:
We have been at war for twenty years that the Taliban started with a successful attack on the Trade Center in 2001. The Taliban has won the war and we are the defeated with 15,000 of our citizens behind the Taliban lines.
We have no say as to who can cross the lines to get to the airport to be evacuated out. The Taliban has all the cards. We have to ask them what they need from us to let our people out.
Our only choices are to pay the price that they set to get our people out, abandon our people there, or start a new war that I predict will last twenty years before we lose again.
Whatever happens, a lot of people are going to die.
