Challenges in the Management of SARS-CoV2 Infection: The Role of Oral Bacteriotherapy as Complementary Therapeutic Strategy to Avoid the Progression of COVID-19

Background: Gastrointestinal disorders are frequent in COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 has been hypothesized to impact on host microbial flora and gut inflammation, infecting intestinal epithelial cells. Since there are currently no coded therapies or guidelines for treatment of COVID-19, this study aimed to evaluate the possible role of a specific oral bacteriotherapy as complementary therapeutic strategy to avoid the progression of COVID-19.

Methods: We provide a report of 70 patients positive for COVID-19, hospitalized between March 9th and April 4th, 2020. All the patients had fever, required non-invasive oxygen therapy and presented a CT lung involvement on imaging more than 50%. Forty-two patients received hydroxychloroquine, antibiotics, and tocilizumab, alone or in combination. A second group of 28 subjects received the same therapy added with oral bacteriotherapy, using a multistrain formulation.

Results: The two cohorts of patients were comparable for age, sex, laboratory values, concomitant pathologies, and the modality of oxygen support. Within 72 h, nearly all patients treated with bacteriotherapy showed remission of diarrhea and other symptoms as compared to less than half of the not supplemented group. The estimated risk of developing respiratory failure was eight-fold lower in patients receiving oral bacteriotherapy. Both the prevalence of patients transferred to ICU and mortality were higher among the patients not treated with oral bacteriotherapy.

Conclusions: A specific bacterial formulation showed a significant ameliorating impact on the clinical conditions of patients positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. These results also stress the importance of the gut-lung axis in controlling the COVID-19 disease.

The formulation used in this study appears to be Sivomixx 800. It’s an extremely potent mix of probiotic bacteria that is generally available from some probiotic manufacturers in the US (in less potent amounts).

From the Sivomixx site:

“Sivomixx® 800 contains a high concentration of bacteria, 800 billion per sachet, to ensure the colonisation and restoration of the gut barrier in specific health conditions.”

The cultures used are the following:

“S. thermophilus DSM32245, L. acidophilus DSM32241, L. plantarum DSM32244 L. paracasei DSM32243, L. helveticus DSM32242, L. brevis DSM27961, B. lactis DSM32246, B. lactis DSM32247.”

What this tells me is that some component of the bacteria provides immunity help and those who benefited already had issues with either their intestinal tract bacterial colonies, or those were “normal” and the added benefit from temporary supplementation helped them successfully recover.

I would suggest that 800 billion probiotics cells would likely cause a large amount of gas in someone already dealing with issues.

Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) calculator

Merde! I have only a 53% chance of making it 10 years more. Less if China and Xiden have their way.

A lot of those comorbidities can be curbed, but it requires some effort.

Which ones are your worst, if I may ask!

The "Oral Bacteriotherapy" section of the paper provides this information:
The formulation administered in this study contained: Streptococcus thermophilus DSM 32345, L.acidophilus DSM 32241, L. helveticus DSM 32242, L. paracasei DSM 32243, L. plantarum DSM 32244, L. brevis DSM 27961, B. lactis DSM 32246, B. lactis DSM 32247. Ormendes SA, Lausanne, Switzerland which gifted the product Sivomixx® (SivoBiome® in USA) is responsible for the standardization of the product in terms of enzymatic content, biochemical and immunological profile. The oral bacteriotherapy involved the use of 2,400 billion bacteria per day. The formulation was administered in three equal doses per day.
They were not administering 800 billion. Perhaps they diluted it or used a different Sivomixx formulation.

That simply looks like three packets of the probiotic mix.

That’s a lot of gas.

The article points out it is called SivoBiome® in the USA. I don't find many hits for a search for "SivoBiome." Interestingly, a company called ExeGi Pharma came up as conducting a clinical trial of SivoBiome. It appears they completed the pre-clinical and phase one trials.
SivoBiome™ Live Biotherapeutic for Resolution of Diarrhea and Prevention of Progression to Intubation in Hospitalized Covid-19 Patients
The company sells "Visbiome" as a a "medical food intended for the dietary management of dysbiosis associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis (UC), pouchitis, and hepatic encephalopathy (HE)."

I know genuine, fermented pickles and sauer kraut are great for gut health. They have to be naturally fermented, not vinegar brined.

I suppose good yogurt may help, too.

What else? Probiotics?? I have no idea how to puck a good one.

I just turned 70 a week ago. My chances of making it another ten years dropped from 90% to 77% due to that one birthday!! Merde, indeed!

Obviously the real world doesn’t work like that. Why in the world would the calculator use ten-year age blocks instead of your actual age? That is ridiculous.

Also, why are critical things like hypertension and BMI not on the list of comorbidities? These seem to be the most important ones for surviving a COVID infection.

Whoa, I divided when I should have multiplied (the old noggin isn’t working like it used to!).

You are right — it appears they administered three packets. At least they administered it three times a day (jk).

Giving HCQ to already hospitalized patients is way too late.

We are still being screwed over by the elites with a stupid fake pandemic. At the most it was an epidemic but that word having been used so much wasn’t strong enough to scare more than half of all people. At the very beginning some of the draconian response was justified because it looked like a biological warfare attack. Without saying it was but knowing it was possible some extra caution was advisable.

After it was apparent that it wasn’t quite as deadly as was supposed at the beginning, it as seized upon by the media and other progressives as a tool to get Trump out of office. They inflated death statistics for effect. Lockdowns kept people from gathering to talk about it. Social media corporations filtered people to keep them from talking about it. News media pumped out story after story to highlight the danger. Social media censored anything that was counter to the narrative. Government prevented anything that might have helped reduce mortality and in fact promoted mortality by putting sick people in convalescent facilities. Who cares if a few more old people die? They were going to die soon anyway.

People love a good bit of dystopian fiction. Very popular shows like Walking Dead made them ready for zombie apocalypse, some were even excited about prospect of millions of people dropping dead and leaving all their stuff lying around.

It is like a security blanket for progressives. They are still using it to keep the people cowed. Some people don’t know better. Some people don’t have the strength to fight back. Some people are happy to be a part of destroying the system for an abstract concept of justice. Half of the people are just not that smart. But smart people who are strong enough to fight back need to stop playing along.

We, I say we ha ha, but some people need to stop worrying about covid coming across the border and start worrying about what demographics are going to look like after covid hysteria wears out. Stop talking about ivermectin and start talking about inflation. Stop talking about therapeutics and start talking about the threat of communism. Covid is not the danger that it was made out to be.

Would a common probiotic capsule be considered a form of “oral bacteriotherapy”?

"I would suggest that 800 billion probiotics cells would likely cause a large amount of gas in someone already dealing with issues."

The probiotic capsule that I take has "1 billion active cultures."

Ingesting bacteria to hopefully colonize your gut for some period of time.

Some bacteria does not stay, though.
