A Texas man who was shot six times is still waiting for surgery in a Houston hospital about a week after the shooting as the facility struggles due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Joel Valdez is waiting for surgery at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston, Texas and spoke to Fox 26 about the situation, advising people to do their best to keep healthy and not end up in the hospital right now.
Ben Taub Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is operating at 98 percent capacity, according to a spokesperson for the Harris Health System, while 33 percent of those patients have conditions related to COVID-19.
Valdez, who is a local business owner and father, spoke to Houston's Fox 26 from his hospital bed on Friday.
He was shot by a stranger last Saturday morning while leaving a Kroger on the 9100 block of the city's W. Sam Houston Parkway.
Police have arrested a suspect and charged him with shooting Valdez earlier this week.
"Having broken bones and bullets in me for over a week now, it's a little frustrating," Valdez said.
"I got shot in the neck right here, but I got hit three times in my left shoulder. That's what is broken and what I'm awaiting surgery for," he said.

There is no other place but out of state. Houston has been the transfer area for Austin for weeks.
I spoke with an ICU nurse on Wednesday for a large hospital within commuting distance of Austin. She said don’t schedule your heart attack any time soon because you will not get a bed. They have no beds.
Spoke to a life long friend on Thursday who’s daughter is a nurse in Abilene and they have no beds. Another relative and nurse say they have no beds in Dallas.
Hearing the same with San Antonio. Texas is getting hit hard with Delta.
Definitely stretching for “Covid Story” to run... And many people take it in, hook, line, and sinker. Bell curve for IQ in North America has a median of around 100. And even the innately sharper among us were never taught how to think.
Or because of covid patients, they are 33 percent over and beyond their normal capacity. Either way you slice it, beds are hard to come by these days.
Doesn’t the federal government give extra money for Covid patients?
Yes they do give more of our taxpayer money for covid cases.
Isn’t TX one of the states biden is dumping illegals?
It doesn’t matter what race, creed or citizenship status you are, you’re taking up bed space.
I agree. But after fleeing Chicago, I can tell you that there is violent crime in places a twelve year old girl could have walked safely at night just 3 years ago. This guy was at a Kroger. Probably he was shot on purpose. He may not have been a saint himself. 6 bullets is not a mistake. But hospitals in the summertime here are dealing with crime related injuries they have rarely seen before.
When Wuhan first caused France to lock down last year, people were told not to ride bikes...hospitals were full of Covid patients...
This is not “you’ve been shot, you’ve got a hole in your vena cava (or duodenum, or spleen) and you need life saving surgery ASAP”.
This is “you’ve been shot and you’ve got a broken bone that we’ve got to pin or plate.”
Sure, any surgery done on me is “major surgery” but still this isn’t fundamentally any different than someone who broke their ankle or wrist at the softball field having to wait.
Still not ideal but - nowhere near the headline - Softball Injury Surgery Delayef.
How much of the ER is tied up with non-emergency care for illegals?
Thank you for that information.
Not buying this.
Just fear porn!
Luck they don’t let illegals in to that hospital! Oh, wait, I guest they do....
Too bad being shot 6 times doesn’t pay hospitals as much as the government pays them to put peope in ICU. If getting shot 6 times paid $20,000 like putting people on respirators, I am sure they would find room for him.
Well....they can just walk into Texas across the international bridges or wade the river.
Medical malpractice right there.
If they had operated on him right away, he would have been home by now.
And COVID cases are not clogging up ORs.
