Weekly Garden Thread - August 14-20, 2021 ['All Kale Caesar' Edition]
August 14, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 08/14/2021 6:17:50 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Replace the cucumbers in a bread and butter pickle recipe with zoodles, bread and butter zoodles.

I’ve done that with Zuke Spears or slices. Works like a charm!

My Zoodles are strictly for smothering in cheese, butter, herbs and/or Alfredo sauce. You know - all the HEALTHY stuff. ;)

It was another hot week here in Central Missouri. Had a squall blow through Thursday evening that gave us some welcome rainfall.

Tomatoes are limping along. Cukes are hanging in there. Cantaloupe has been harvested and devoured. Pole beans are rocking. Gourd vines are loaded. Peppers still trying. Summer squash are all squashed out. Still need to pull beets and work them up.

Spread the compost that I dumped last weekend, but wasn’t able to till it in. The old Briggs and Stratton said NO MORE! So I just raked it down best I could and sowed a couple rows of kale seed.

The local china tool store doesn’t have the engine that I need in stock, so I’m going to have to look around to find something that will fit the old beast. Shouldn’t be too hard to scare one up and have it shipped to the house.

I canned up 6 quarts of sauce last week, and am looking at probably 8 by Monday.

The garlic is almost dried out and ready for trimming.

I need to dig the onions to dry in the sun.

Fortunately, we’ve had a nice dry spell for a change.

And with just a few clicks of the mouse I found what I needed on Amazon. For not much more $$$ than I was going to spend on a chinese Briggs clone, I was able to get a genuine Kohler.

It’s the same model engine as the one that’s on my pressure washer. That sucker is six years old and starts on the first pull every time. It should be a bolt-on fit for the old Craftsman tiller. If it’s not, I have everything I need to fabricate an adaptor plate to make it work.

Kicking myself for not staking up my tiths .... the one (of 3) that blew over the worst is wilting big time ... I don’t think it will make it. I still have 2 so there will be plenty of flowers, but I hate to lose the 3rd - really big/bushy & loaded with flowers. At least the flowers will still be good for a day or two, even if the whole plant doesn’t make it. I did just water it again - ‘hail Mary’ last attempt to keep it going.

I decided to try cockscombs again (after not having much luck with them (kids call 'em brain flowers)

Mrs. Augie tried those several years back. We like them and they do well in the heat of a Misery summer.

If you let them go to seed you'll never need to buy seed again. Mrs. Augie collects the dried flower heads and just tosses em on the ground anywhere she wants them to grow the following season.

The birds help too, I think. We have cockscomb growing all over the place. It looks especially nice growing next to the water on the pond dam.

A friend called Thursday morning and said a vendor had fresh Figs at the Farmers Market so Lady Bender grabbed some cash and bought figs as big as base balls for me…

Good pic! Yes, Kale is tough but nutritious. My teeth cannot chew it all though.

Tom plants here in MA are about 2 weeks or more behind since July "tied for the third cloudiest July since the 1950s and the second cloudiest month of the year," with "19 of 31 days were recorded with measurable rain, the most on record in July for Boston. Worcester got over a foot of rain, the wettest July on record at 13.85.″ - https://boston.cbslocal.com/2021/08/01/new-england-weather-july-rain/

But thank God He knows what is best and this will work out for good, and will balance out, and plants are growing well now, esp. the butternut squash take over the land:n

I love this recipe....going to try it soon. I grow a lot of Lacinato kale in my garden because I love it.

I bet an traditional Caesar dressing with a smidge of anchovie juice would be delicious as well.

My sister and her husband have rented a house and a boat for a fishing trip somewhere above Rhinelander. The only thing they love more than gardening is fishing.

The heat index is in the high 80s right now, at this writing, which is nearly 3pm. I have been giving my landscaping assistants Frogg Togg cooling blankets to work with. Just wet them and they get cool. Usually, in Georgia, landscapers don’t install in this heat. We wait till October. I have small jobs to do, with clients who will water 3xweek, so I bring my guys Gatorade and cooling blankets.
