Total vaccination numbers up as cities announce vaccine mandates

Total vaccination numbers in the U.S. are at the highest they have been in more than a month as companies, organizations and, most recently, cities have begun announcing vaccine mandates. At the same time, Covid cases have also climbed around the country, driven by the highly contagious delta variant.

White House chief of staff Ronald Klain said in a post on Twitter Friday that Covid vaccinations had reached their highest 24-hour total since before July 4, with 918,000 doses administered and 576,000 newly vaccinated, up from 821,000 and 565,000 respectively last Friday.

This comes in a week that has seen reported Covid case counts at the level of November 2020 and a seven-day average of more than 140,000 cases per day, according to NBC News' tally.

"Vaccine requirements and incentives are starting to pay off — as well as the tragedy of seeing so much needless illness and loss due to Delta's impact on the unvaccinated," Klain wrote.

Is the "tragedy of seeing so much needless illness and loss due to Delta's impact on the unvaccinated" yielding, the eyes of the Admin, a "pay off" of higher vaccination rates?

And, for what it is worth, all this "pay off" is also coming "in a week that has seen reported Covid case counts at the level of November 2020". Weren't the shots supposed to lower infections?

I’m throwing in the towel regarding my unvaccinated 16 year old. Too many forces closing in: she’ll have to miss 10 days of sports if she’s “exposed” to a positive case in school (but if vaccinated she won’t), she can’t see her grandma in the hospital next week, she wants to attend her brother’s wedding next in 2022 and go to Canada next summer (Canada announced vaccine requirements today) and she needs to go to CA college in 2 years. I’ll be surprised if she’s allowed to take her CA DMV test on Monday unvaccinated!

I was trying to hold out for the J&J or Norovax for her but I’ve now scheduled her 2 Pfizer vaccines—which barely work against the variant!

For access reasons only, not for health reasons. I cry uncle!

And what if she has a serious adverse reaction or heaven forbid, dies from the shots. Then how will you feel? I urge you to do complete due diligence before you make that choice.

Thanks, and I honestly appreciate your feedback, but I fear neither Covid nor the shots, nor does my teen.

I’ve evaluated the risks and benefits (few of which have anything to do with health and most of which have to do with restrictions and access). My daughter wants to travel to Hawaii, Canada, Europe—and she wants to play sports and go to college. All are prohibited to her now without the shots. So she will take the risk. Yes, she may (unlikely) die from the shots. But she also doesn’t want to never travel again, never visit anyone in the hospital again, never eat out again. . .we are in CA which is like living in the Soviet Union.

I’d hoped to wait for more options than Pfizer like Norovax or the J&J but it seems other options won’t be ready in time.

It sucks that the Moderna vaccine is not authorized for people under age 18. My extended family has a 17 year old headed off to the University of Maryland system and they require vaccination. So she’s having to get the Pfizer shots, unfortunately.

The j&j shot is available in CA.
Go to vaccines.gov and enter your zip code and check only the j&j box.
I live in Sonoma County...there are plenty of pharmacies in my town that have it in stock.
I’m sure your town would have it too, or one you could drive to.
Why have you not checked into getting the shot you want?

Oh I’m talking about my 16 year old daughter. She’s only eligible for the Pfizer, the least effective and lamest vaccine.

I don’t know why the J%J or Moderna didn’t get approval for 16 year olds yet—so far they are still 18+ only.
