Babies born in the Covid pandemic 'have lower IQs': Three-month-olds now score around 80 on intelligence tests - compared to 100 before the virus struck, research says

Children born during the Covid pandemic may have lower IQs because of reduced interactions during lockdowns, a study has claimed.

Researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island found babies born since March 2020 have worse cognitive, verbal and motor skills than children who entered the world before coronavirus.

Lockdowns have meant children have significantly less interaction with the outside world, leading to 'shockingly' low cognitive development.

He told The Guardian: 'It’s not subtle by any stretch. You don’t typically see things like that, outside of major cognitive disorders.'

Scientists tested the children on verbal, non-verbal and early-learning skills to assess their development.

They calculate an early composite rather than using the usual IQ test used for adults.

Are these idiots wearing masks at home in front of their babies and masking them up too?

There are some country music songs that can do this also.

Plus leaving CNN on in the home. Or MSPMS.

Or introducing people by stating their personal pronouns in front of a child.

Or continually asking a son if he really feels he’s a girl.

Or Kamala cackling over and over...

Think for a moment what life was like for a newborn for the first several months before the panic-demic. New people showing up and making the baby interact with them. Things being waved in their faces and gifts like drifting mobiles and all kinds of toys. Now, post panic-demic nobody comes, probably many fewer interactions and many fewer toys. Could that effect the “IQ tests?”

An excellent point.

The source paper refers to a longitudinal study under NIH called ECHO - Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes. Their website has a reference to the tests administered under that program and this is apparently what the researchers in the paper are using as a baseline. Unfortunately, the content of the tests are apparently tightly guarded secrets, some tests being considered proprietary.

Nevertheless, they do provide a list of the proprietary measures in their manual of operating procedures. The other tests are referred to as "measurement information sheets" and require login to access.

I can’t believe this, not even a little bit. Firstly, Brown is not a serious school. But you can’t say lock-down babies lost 20% of their intelligence. Thats crazy. Their mothers are with them all the time. Maybe they found mothers who threw their babies in a closet or something. But I am thinking its just a bunch of interns who took their first survey and got it wrong.

While the trend is plausible, the variance from year to year really needs explanation as it is quite outsized. This looks like an artifact from small sample size.

I’m going to say a test of iq at infancy is junk science.

I'm NOT going to go out on a limb and say you're right. It's junk science.

Unbelievable what passes for "science" these days isn't it?

Unfortunately, the author of the DailyMail article mistakenly says “IQ”. The paper the article refers to makes no mention of IQ.

The only measures they refer to are “early learning composite”, “verbal development quotient”, “non-verbal development quotient”.

For those measures, the kids they measured were down by 20 compared to those of earlier years in the ECHO study (see post 48).

Children born during the Covid pandemic may have lower IQs because of reduced interactions during lockdowns, a study has claimed.

Or because mom had low O2 and high CO2 levels from wearing a bacteria-laden mask all the time.

How many babies have active social lives in their first three months anyway?

Great point. The low oxygen levels of the mother from wearing masks must be taken into account.

Also, the distress, and perhaps nutrition deficiencies the mother may have encountered through the past year too.
