After decades in woods, New Hampshire man forced from cabin

or almost three decades, 81-year-old David Lidstone has lived in the woods of New Hampshire along the Merrimack River in a small cabin adorned with solar panels. He has grown his own food, cut his own firewood, and tended to his cat and chickens.

But his off-the-grid existence appears to be at risk.

...“You came with your guns, you arrested me, brought me in here, you’ve got all my possessions. You keep ’em,” he told a judge at a hearing Wednesday. “I’ll sit here with your uniform on until I rot, sir.” “It’s lying, cheating corrupt judges like you that are stepping on little people like me. But I’m telling you, sir, you step on me, I’m going to bite your ankle.”

He should run for office.

Does he have a deed?

For adverse possession to work, it has to be adverse.

It may be that a previous land-owner gave verbal permission for the guy to live there decades ago, and that same land-owner sold the property without sharing that information with the buyer....

Of course the previous land-owner may be deceased by now...

Lawyers should have fun with this one.

Property owner is 86.
Guy living off grid is 81.

He’s been in a cabin on 73 acres of land for 27 years.

Hard to believe that no accommodation is possible.

He’s a squatter who has been squatting on private property for 27 years, living for free. If all the liberal do-gooders like him so much, maybe they can pitch in and buy him a nice cabin on the river so he can continue to live for free. But instead, they paint the land owner who wants to build his own riverfront cabin on his own land as the bad guy.

2nd Amendment meant to deter tyranny of government as much as anything else. Once they disarm us the Republic of the USA is certainly history.

He’s been living there with permission. Can’t claim adverse possession.

It sounds pretty cut and dried to me. He is squatting, it’s not his land, the dwelling is against zoning laws. He doesn’t have much of a case.

I feel sorry for the guy but you do not just take up on somebody else’s property and think it’s going to be smooth sailing no matter how long you have been there. What if all these incoming illegals started doing this?

I feel bad for him. Maybe some organization will chip in or something for some other arrangements for him but he’s always going to miss what was his home for so long.

they say he cant stay there because the place is ‘illegal’ ie doesn’t have septic, or other things- said he doesn’t have an ‘access road’ to the cabin- he should tell them there is a road- it’s just camouflaged with sticks leaves and twigs”

He claims it’s a hunting cabin,m and not a home- and that he had permission, verbal, from previous owner to stay there-

In the local news tonight here in NH, it is being reported that the structure in question is on fire.

The thing is that there was a land transaction that happened while he was squatting—and I would be very interested to know what was or was not disclosed to the current owner.

It may be that the prior owner “pulled a fast one”.

Lidstone, a bearded, small-framed, spritely man, has resisted efforts to leave since a judge issued an order for him to vacate in 2017. Following that, both sides had attempted to reach some sort of agreement for him, but were unsuccessful, according to court documents.

Not sure what kind of compromise the squatter expects. Does someone need to build him a new cabin? He also has 4 kids and a brother, none of them seem to be in contact with him.

Between 81 year old squatter and 86 year old owner something probably could be worked out. But “they” are in the picture...government.

He’s good at living off the grid, but he is living on somebody else’s property. The owner is older that him at age 86. He plans to get rid of that cabin, and has been asking this man to move since 2016, when his existance was first discovered.

Cabin Man says he ‘was given’ this area by agreement, but there is no paperwork supporting this.
He has a brother age. 76. Four grown children who have not spoken to him in years. He needs to go.

Hard to believe that no accommodation is possible.

Of course the government is now involved, bringing up sewage and water issues. The owner didn't even know the guy was living there, so he clearly didn't have an obvious or deleterious presence. Once government forces someone's hand, accommodation is made extremely difficult.
