Utah Authorities Concerned About People Hammocking Atop Power Line

Authorities in Utah are sounding the alarm about a weird and worrisome trend wherein people hammock atop power lines. The Weber County Sheriff's Office made note of the unnerving fad in a Facebook post last week, explaining that they have seen a troubling increase in thrill-seekers attempting to pull off the far-from-relaxing feat. The department shared a photo showing two such individuals ascending a power line tower with one of the climbers having already reached a rather nerve-wracking height.

Not only are they risking electrocution, but they could fall. The worst is they are very stupidly bathing themselves in harmful high power electromagnetic fields. In a few years they’ll probably have cancer.

Just think of it as evolution in action.

“wait a minute there professor, we took care of the glitch”

“it’ll work itself out naturally”

“problem is solved from your end”

I sincerely hope that they are Democratic voters because if they are Republicans then that’s two votes for the Democrats in the afterlife.

Suits me.... let them fry themselves and have their pictures on Facebook.

While I agree that it takes a special kind of stupid to pull a stunt like this, I'm concerned about the people who will be inconvenienced by a power outage when they have to pull their sorry fried corpse down.

Ever have a squirrel get in your transformer? Happened to me once. It isn't fun. The fact that it is less fun for the stupid squirrel is small comfort.

It’s always the same. Utah is where people go to pick fights with Isaac Newton. Plenty of high places to test the theory of gravity.

Are they swinging the hammock from the power lines or from the girders of the tower?

The first guy who did this was likely an employee who asked himself, "I've got a day and a half job out there. Do I really want to come all the way back just to have to go back out there the next morning? Sleeping in the truck is killer on my back, but why don't I just camp out overnight and finish the job in the morning? I could bring my hammock but there are no trees to tie it to. Wait a minute, I'll tie it to the girders in the tower!"

If I was camping in bear country, I would set up a hammock in a power line tower.
-I could keep all my food with me.
-I could have an unlimited night light with just a small fluorescent tube (they light up on their own under power lines).
-I could whiz right off the side instead of staggering around in the dark with the bears.
-I could also get great photos of sunset and sunrise.

Trying to figure out what the harm is here?

Flaming crispy critters falling onto forestland could be a legitimate public concern as, umm, fallout from a private act...

For the record: I think those climbing the transmission towers are rock climbers who are practicing or demonstrating rock climbing bivouac technique. I am pretty sure there are an abundance or at least a few women that engage in the sport.

It might actually be safer and more comfortable learning to bivouac on a tower at 100 feet than say 1,000 feet on a cliff side.

just thinkin’

Staggering around in the dark with the bears is the only reason I go camping these days.

Electric distribution lines are around 2500 volts, stepped down to 120V on a transformer before entering you home. More than enough voltage and current to kill you. High voltage transmission lines are around 145,000 volts and can arc if you just get near them.

I could see that, but are these folks actually attaching to the power lines? Or just the towers?

Unless there is proof of an actual danger, let them have their “attempted death by misadventure” experience.

You can hear the bigger lines sizzling like bacon when standing underneath.

Don’t whiz on or even near the power lines.

Ya think pissing on a cow fence is exciting? You ain’t seen nuthin’!

I can’t see a way for them to get from the grounded tower to a live high voltage line.

Literacy, either English language or technical, is an instant disqualification for hiring headline writers.

The sound you hear is mostly mechanical, the powerlines swaying back and forth at 60 Hertz and harmonics.

DO NOT use public resources to “rescue” them. They chose to put themselves in that situation. If people want to Darwin themselves out of existence, just charge their estate for the cleanup.
