A neighbor flew from Germany to Guam(?) in a B-24. The B-24 was going to be used to hunt Japanese subs. He was being transferred to some General’s office. I think with all the stops and days off, it took about a week. When he got to his destination, the General berated him for being late.

He said he didn’t care if he ever flew again.

Comfortable commercial air travel does still exist. Just not with any carriers based outside Asia. American airlines (and many/most of our airports) are among the worst. When I was traveling it was an embarrassment to arrive at the international arrivals area at Dulles, the airport for the capital of the (once) Free World. Some third world $#/+hole airports are better run.

As a VERY regular customer of Eastern & Continental - complete with getting the free 1st class upgrades - my initial cross-pacific flight on EVA Airlines (Taiwan) in economy bested the US carriers’ premium service. I could only imagine what treatment the folks up front were getting on EVA!

I've never been a fan of cheap airline fares. You just know it's not going to be a good experience. It's like those $19.99 rooms at the Motel 6 with the broken icemaker, the vending machine with stale cheese and crackers and pillbugs in the bathtub/shower.

I flew People's Express back in the 1980s. It was like flying in a Greyhound bus. It was nice to be able to afford business class or extended legroom in the better airlines but these days, I don't even bother flying anymore because of those stupid mask mandates.
