Fire engulfs Tesla Model S in San Diego
This #tesla @Tesla exploded on my block at 1 AM here in #sandiego . Is this something that has been happening? It was parked and there was a gunshot-like noise that woke me up. By the time I decided to get up and go outside the fire department was hosing it down. pic.twitter.com/9q5VDui1at

The fire damage on the doors is interesting.

Unless the battery is in the front and back seats ... I don’t get it.

Tesla now advises their cars remain outside of garages for this very reason.
To: knarf
The batteries for Teslas line the undercarriage of the vehicle. They’re not in the boot or the trunk, IIRC.

Well the tire pressure sensors still say ‘all ok’
To: rarestia
THAT aligns with the melted doors .... sort'a.
The floor line should be damaged as well .... unless the FD got there that quickly.

A lithium fire is hot enough to burn through the doors and melt the glass.
Can’t even hose it down until the lithium is expended because it might blow up.
Anyone inside is dead within 1 second of initiation.

Do you still get the tax credit if the car flames out in the first year of purchase??

I suspect that the inner door panels created a chimney effect which increased the heat of the flames traveling upward from the battery compartment beneath the floor.

If I owned on of them I certainly wouldn’t put it in the garage.
To: PUGACHEV
I would agree with that assessment.
