Fire engulfs Tesla Model S in San Diego

This #tesla @Tesla exploded on my block at 1 AM here in #sandiego . Is this something that has been happening? It was parked and there was a gunshot-like noise that woke me up. By the time I decided to get up and go outside the fire department was hosing it down. pic.twitter.com/9q5VDui1at

Why didn’t it drive itself to the nearest fire department?

A nice thing about gasoline is that it won’t ignite unless there’s oxygen present. Thus it’s not going to explode in the tank, and the air/gasoline mixture above the gasoline in the tank won’t ignite either.

A battery, on the other hand, contains everything it needs to explode if it is shorted or whatever.

Does Boeing and the FAA know about this?...............

My first car was more Bondo than metal. And to make things worse, I was the world’s worst Bondo mechanic.

On the bright side, at least it isn’t burning fossil fuels.

I especially like the custom contour seats, and the beverage-gripping dash.

Also, the whole car is potentially a bud vase.

What’s to keep the thing from blowing up while people are in it? If it isn’t safe enough to be left in a garage, it isn’t safe to drive. What if these things spontaneously burn in parking garages and catch other cars on fire?

I don’t think electric cars are a good idea until safer, more stable batteries are available.

From experience with 2005 Durango, electrical shorts in new cars with computers and sensors will short out, eventually. Picture the teacher in the school parking lot doing 'donuts' in the fresh snow in Vancouver, WA, when the car erupts in flames. Fortunately it was a gas fueled auto and she got out alive. So what happens if the sensor detecting remaining battery life shorts in an EV?
