Thirty years ago this month, the Cold War ended with a failed coup in Moscow. As was remarked by many at the time, Marx’s dictum that history repeats itself as farce proved true for the Soviet Union, the state that had defined itself by his ideology.
In August 1991, while the USSR’s reforming General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev holidayed in his Ukrainian dacha, a group of hard-liners seized power. Gorbachev, under house arrest, turned to the BBC to find out what was going on, since in the Soviet Union nothing the media said was true unless the party said so. He learned that, in the centre of Moscow, Russian Federation president Boris Yeltsin courageously stood in front of the city’s White House in defiance of the plotters, surrounded by supporters brandishing the old Russian flag.
Perhaps what wasn’t clear to everyone was that Yeltsin was drunk for much of it. The true extent of his alcoholism became more apparent in the years after he dissolved the communist state a few months later and became president of an independent Russia, although he already had a colourful reputation for drink-related antics.
The plotters, it turned out, were also mostly legless. Having began a cack-handed coup that they weren’t prepared to kill for, the ringleaders appeared on television looking ashen-faced, some shaking nervously, their insides rotting from vodka. Most of all, though, they just appeared old, old and old beyond their years, the face of a fading empire based on a faith no one really believed in anymore.
By this stage, the Soviet Union was itself dying of alcohol, and attempts to treat it proved fruitless. One of the biggest mistakes made by Gorbachev — a very moderate drinker, which is why he’s alive and his rival Yeltsin is long dead — was to raise the tax on vodka, as part of a drive to tackle the country’s catastrophic problem with drink. Russian humour is famously bleak and sharp, and this led to a joke in which a boy asks, “Papa, and this means that you shall drink less?” “No, son, this means that you shall eat less”.
Our marxist democRATs will probably feed us opioids to numb the despair that they will bring.
We got tired of winning for nearly a century and too many have romanticized socialist/communist, poor-living... Until they find we’re all stuck with it permanently.
Too many think we can just vote our way out of it...
bump
It’s not despair - the Democrats are actively stopping us from letting us succeed and prosper. Just like every other communist regime.
Only the despair is being intentionally fostered by the Cultural Marxist who were by design fashioned to be miserable wretches unable to sustain the nation or the civilization.
The Soviet Union collapsed because Socialism inherently brings misery.
And the Left is the cold, dead hand of the Soviet Union still clasped on out throat.
Seems to me like once the lefties secure their financial future ( and opulent life style ), and the next three or four generations financial future too, they then turn their sites on the middle class to “socislize” them.
Agreed. We will never vote our way out of this.
The whole idea of — “Wait until 2022! We’ll beat ‘em in the next election!” really annoys me.
1) They cheat and get away with it. We’re not going to win an election.
2) We have two Democrat parties. 50% of the US population has no political representation. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter which party wins. The political class is at war with the People. Voting isn’t the answer.
what despair? i’m mad as hell.
They already are facilitated by the tourist bureau that used to be ICE/Border Patrol. Fentanyl, carfentanyl and all the others are pouring across the border.
The U.S. is dying from unprosecuted treason by ChiComjoe and his kakistocracy (along with the Demonicrat and RINOcrat members of Congress).
Communism murdered 100 million people for political reasons.
Democrats like Communism.
Why not??
We have ‘athletes’ who choke in competition and sell themselves to America’s enemies; we have trained, paid, armed police who cry in critical situations; ‘politicians’ who don’t respect laws OR observe their oath of office; teachers who want to indoctrinate INSTEAD of teach and who want to make our future by getting rid of the past; parents who refuse to set proper examples for their children; we have young malcontents who confuse opinion with fact but insist on passing themselves off as the intellectual and moral equivalent of informed and experienced adults; we have a media that hourly surpasses the worst and most unprincipled practitioners of ‘journalism’ in the history of the English language ..... should I stop here?
We can play it safe or play it cool
Follow the leader or make up all the rules
Whatever you want, the choice is yours
So choose
Heavy Cross
Gossip
They got rich, we got f......
History repeats itself.
I remember about 20 years ago that people were still parroting “America is the greatest country ever on the face of this earth” quite frequently. We thought it was our God given right, without realizing we had to continually earn this position.
America has become its own worst enemy Like the Soviet Union, the US is dying from despair

Although many here were to young to remember the Apollo Lunar landings - at the time, HOPE was the largest factor to come out of the program - even poor Mexicans living in remote villages, accessible only by horseback, had HOPE for their childrens’ future as they watched the televised landings.
The end of the Apollo program begin the long American slide into despair.
One thing is certain, narcotics is the life blood of the democratic party, but I don't think it's about democrats and republicans anymore.. It's good vs evil.! Us against the commies, the thieves, the liars, and the sodomites... :(
