THE GREAT REBELLION: Gov. Wise Driven out of the Kanawha Valley; Important Orders Issued by General Scott; IMPORTANT FROM GEN. BANKS’ COLUMN (8/2/1861)

WASHINGTON, Thursday, Aug. 1.

The Pennsylvania Delegation in Congress have unanimously recommended, the President to appoint Gen. CADWALADER to a position according to his rank and achievements as a soldier. If Gen. CADWALLADER's services at Baltimore are to be the standard of his merits, I am afraid the President will not give the General a very elevated place.

Ex-President BUCHANAN is so ill that he is obliged to forego his customary visit to Berkeley Springs.

Gen. SCOTT has issued a general order commanding our troops in all cases to respect the tomb of WASHINGTON and the grounds of the Mount Vernon estate, should the operations of war require them to act in that vicinity. He says that the estate has already been overrun by bands of rebels.

The debate in the Senate to-day, between BRECKINRIDGE and BAKER, of Oregon, was very exciting. The Ex-Vice-President undertook to demonstrate that the President "was assuming powers not expressly nor implicitly given him by the Constitution and the laws," or rather made a speech for the benefit of his rebel associates of the Confederate States. Senator BAKER undertook to refute his arguments and disprove his statements, and was most successful, overwhelming BRECKINRIDGE, and showing his disunion proclivities and his sympathy with the traitors of the South.

The Union Defence Committee of New-York have placed a large amount of wines, liquors and hospital stores at the disposal of the Medical Bureau of the Army, for use of the Government hospitals.

There are private advices here which state that JUAREZ, under a threat of impeachment for the McLean-Ocampo Treaty, has been forced to resign the Presidency, his resignation to take effect on the 23d, ult.

“Editorial: Uniformity in Uniforms – 5”

Interesting that from the very start they noted that significant ‘friendly fire’ casualties were occurring due to the variety of uniforms worn on both sides.

I don’t know much about the topic, but I always found the ‘zouave’ units’ uniforms to be especially distinctive.

Richmond had/has a number of foundries that got coal from the Ohio valley to make steel.

Swords, knives and guns are pretty important during a war...unless you are throwing around fissible material of course.
