Laurel Hubbard is set to make history when she competes as the first openly transgender athlete at an Olympic Games.
The New Zealander will take the stage on August 2 for the women's super heavyweight +87kg weightlifting event.
At 43 years old, Hubbard is also set to be the oldest weightlifter competing in the sport at the Tokyo games.
Her father, Dick Hubbard, was a wealthy cereal company magnate and briefly served as Auckland's mayor from 2004 to 2008.
Hubbard revealed she took up "an archetypally male" sport in a bid to feel more masculine.
"I thought perhaps if I tried something that was so masculine perhaps that's what I would become,'' she told Radio New Zealand in 2017. "But sadly, that wasn't the case.... sad in the sense that maybe it would have made some of the darker periods in my life a bit more manageable."
Before that, Hubbard took part in male weightlifting competitions. After transitioning, she began competing in international weightlifting events.
Three years later in 2001, Hubbard withdrew from the sport, explaining that it "became too much to bear ... just the pressure of trying to fit into a world that perhaps wasn't really set up for people like myself."
In 2017, the New Zealander competed internationally as Laurel Hubbard for the first time. She took home the gold medal at the Australian International championships in the heaviest women's division, lifting 123kg in the snatch discipline and 145kg in the clean and jerk

Yep ... hope “she” sets records that surpass everything previous in women’s weightlifting ... and the silver and bronze medalists can look at “her” up there on the top podium spot and know that they’ve been cheated out and they can’t say or do a thing about it

A man competing as an Olympic level weightlifter woman at 43 years old. If he wins, will he be the oldest ever? Supposedly the average age for Olympic weightlifting women is 25 years old. I guess all the 25 year old women should be glad he is that old, a guy competing as a woman starting in his 20s could dominate the sport for many more decades I guess.

This is worse than the South Park episode where Cartman participated in the Special Olympics. Many developmently disabled people have more common sense than leftists who can’t understand why people born male cannot compete physically against women.
Why doesn’t that weightlifter have any arm muscles?
I couldn’t read all article. Transgenders should refuse to allow any more “female” trans athletes, until some “male” trans athletes start competing. Or, do they think “male” trans athletes cannot compete against men?

The SOB couldn’t make it as a male weightlifter, so ‘it’ figured that ‘it’ would claim to be a ‘female’. A good, solid kick between the legs, would show ‘it’ to be a male. What a pathetic loser! What a pathetic organization, the IOC.
So brave to break down these barriers. This brings me one step closer to my dream of wrestling college chicks.
