High-Jump ‘Best Friends’ Convince Olympic Officials to Let Them Share Gold
New York Post ^ | August 1, 2021 | David Meyer

Olympic high jumpers — and best friends — Mutaz Essa Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi convinced Games officials to let them share gold on Sunday instead of jumping to decide the winner.

Both Barshim, 30, and Tamberi, 29, had cleared jumps of 2.37 meters, then failed to clear the 2.39 meter hurdle three times each. But Barshim resisted when an Olympic officials offered him to “jump-off” against his Italian competitor.

“Can we have two golds?” the Qatari asked the official — who nodded approvingly, causing the self-described “best friends” to clasp hands and whoop for joy.

Because the arm chair warriors who spend all day telling kids to get off their lawn and have never won a thing in their lives hate a good story.

I believe it shows true sportsmanship.

Ok, everybody gets a participation trophy. We don't need Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Everybody shares. So cool.

Some posters on FR have gotten so cynical, we can’t even appreciate a rare moment of true sportsmanship. That’s my take, u can have yours.

Don't be an angry elf. I've played sports all my life. No disrespect, but this is not true sportsmanship.

Sports is competition and winning! True sportsmanship is how you act after kicking their ass.

Did they play both national anthems at the same time?

So, before any competition, all the contestants say:

Can’t we just declare this thing a tie, and we all get gold?

Sometimes you go with missed vaults before that.

Most misses loses.

When was the Olympics’ “jump the shark moment”? I nominate the 1968 black power salute by Tommie Smith and Juan Carlos.

Sorry, but in each of these cases, there should be some type of run off. Only one winner. You can come up with as many pics as you like, but the rules are what needs to be changed to determine a winner. What is so hard to understand about winning and losing.

They should be allowed to share Silver.

They both competed 3 times against each other the best they could and tied. Enough is enough. They both agreed and they chopped it up. Move on. This event isn’t changing Western Civ or some sort of watershed event.

This event is indicative of the “go along to get along” crap that is largely the reason we are in this mess. So, yes, it is a western civ changing movement, and no, I will not Move on.
It’s just a sporting event, what harm will it do?! Everyone wins and no one is exceptional, sound familiar?

Can two people agree on anything and for one time in their life and be courteous and kind? Do these two athletes have the right to agree on being equal on that given day? Maybe tomorrow might be different maybe in an hour it will be different. But at that moment they both agreed to share the top spot because they could not best each other.

It's not like they didn't beat a whole lot of other athletes to get where they ended up.

I get that you cannot understand the virtue of sportsmanship. Everyone did not win. Only the top 3 were on the podium. The vast majority of the field went home with nothing.

You cannot have a second place winner without a first place winner. They both deserve the gold as they tied for first place.

Good luck on persuading people here.

I read up on this and the possibility was already clearly included in the rules for high jump. Basically, these two guys were both perfect until a certain height. (Someone else also made it to that height, but he didn’t have a perfect run prior to that, so he got bronze.) Anyway, at that point, they could either have a jump off at a height that was lower than the failed height (IOW, one that they had already demonstrated mastery of) or agree to share the gold medal. It’s quite possible that some high jumpers don’t see a jump off competition where you just keep jumping to the point of exhaustion as being what their sport is about. Whatever the case, it was something already considered as a possibility by the rules, so obviously it’s something the people who actually understand their sport have discussed before.

Shhh, FR bullies don’t have sportsmanship. But I am of the same opinion on this one! Hope they had a silver and a bronxe medalists as well.
