They both competed 3 times against each other the best they could and tied. Enough is enough. They both agreed and they chopped it up. Move on. This event isn’t changing Western Civ or some sort of watershed event.

This event is indicative of the “go along to get along” crap that is largely the reason we are in this mess. So, yes, it is a western civ changing movement, and no, I will not Move on.
It’s just a sporting event, what harm will it do?! Everyone wins and no one is exceptional, sound familiar?

Good luck on persuading people here.

I read up on this and the possibility was already clearly included in the rules for high jump. Basically, these two guys were both perfect until a certain height. (Someone else also made it to that height, but he didn’t have a perfect run prior to that, so he got bronze.) Anyway, at that point, they could either have a jump off at a height that was lower than the failed height (IOW, one that they had already demonstrated mastery of) or agree to share the gold medal. It’s quite possible that some high jumpers don’t see a jump off competition where you just keep jumping to the point of exhaustion as being what their sport is about. Whatever the case, it was something already considered as a possibility by the rules, so obviously it’s something the people who actually understand their sport have discussed before.
