High-Jump ‘Best Friends’ Convince Olympic Officials to Let Them Share Gold

Olympic high jumpers — and best friends — Mutaz Essa Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi convinced Games officials to let them share gold on Sunday instead of jumping to decide the winner.

Both Barshim, 30, and Tamberi, 29, had cleared jumps of 2.37 meters, then failed to clear the 2.39 meter hurdle three times each. But Barshim resisted when an Olympic officials offered him to “jump-off” against his Italian competitor.

“Can we have two golds?” the Qatari asked the official — who nodded approvingly, causing the self-described “best friends” to clasp hands and whoop for joy.

So if the Stuporbowl ends in a tie we just declare both champs??

This is so lame on so many levels.

Medals for everyone. Trophies for everyone.

Kind of surprised the Officials don’t have a further countback rule to break the tie, i.e. see who was successful in fewer attempts at the height prior to that, etc, etc.

The correct solution would have been to let them share silver.

I think this is a cool thing! They both competed and basically had a tie…I believe it shows true sportsmanship.

Yeah, if that’s their choice they should have to split the cost of a second gold medal for that event - they are very expensive to produce.

We are witnessing the end of the Olympics. Not witnessing in the watching sense but in the knowing.

Dead heats happen all the time in horseracing. They each tried 3 times to beat each other and could not. Not a bad ending. They both tried their best and decided to chop it up. Ties do in fact happen in some sports.

You can both share the sliver, but there can only be one gold

In competition, there are no ties. There is a winner and a loser, period. We can all come up with different examples, but bottom line, neither one of them wanted to be the loser. So brave/s.

The whole idea of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place is soooooo last millennia!

Just like high school Valedictorian and Top 10 Academics.

EVERY Olympian should get a Gold Participation Medal!

No, they were both first. In a dead heat in horseracing for first it would be two winners and a third place finisher in the money.

Yes 2 silvers since no one wanted to compete for a gold.
