During the Cold War, the Communist Bloc countries were the masters of masking doping with steroids. Rooskie heavyweight weightlifter Vasily Alekseyev probably was the best-doped Olympic athlete who never got caught.

At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, there was all manner of chatter about not just their “masculine” appearances but what unnaturally deep voices the “women” of the (communist) East German swim team had. When confronted with this observation, their coach replied,

“We came here to swim, not to sing.”
