However, if the scientists added a drug to prevent the loss of H3K4me1, the supporting cells remained temporarily primed for transdifferentiation. Likewise, supporting cells from the vestibular system, which naturally maintained H3K4me1, were still primed for transdifferentiation into adulthood. 
The treatment worked to improve hearing, although there were some side-effects.

The same process of epigenetic control and cell differentiation is what makes it possible go from a single egg cell to an adult human being with all the required subsystems and then stop growing at the right point. Its one of biology’s great mysteries and the target of enormous active research.
Regenerative medicine like this has the potential to replace heart, kidney, brain, skin, nerve, limb, muscle and other critical subsystems that have been lost to age or accident. It will be a practical method of attaining near immortality. Future generations will look back on our crude medical practices with shock and amusement.
