THE GREAT REBELLION: No Military Movements at Washington; Gen. McClelland Preparing to take Command; IMPORTANT MOVEMENTS IN MISSOURI (7/28/1861)

WASHINGTON, Saturday, July 27.

There have been no military movements of importance to-day. Our army is being reorganized, and the morale of the defeated regiments is rapidly improving.

A careful estimate of the killed, wounded and missing, reduces the aggregate from the three causes to below eight hundred.

The commissioned officers of the Second Regiment Vermont Volunteers have requested their Colonel to resign. He exhibited marked cowardice ice in the battle of Sunday last, skulking in the most shameful manner.

P. SINCLAIR, of the Seventy-ninth, who was reported missing, has been in the Alexandria Hospital, slightly wounded.

Com. O. DE FOREST has procured the acceptance of a regiment of Cavalry from the State of New-York. The Government finds horses and equipment's, and the troop is to be mustered in by companies. The regiment is to be called the Harris Guards.

Notwithstanding the statements to that effect, there is not entertained by the Administration any fears of an immediate attack on Washington. There are now around Washington thirty-five thousand men who were not in the late battle, and the artillery force is much greater than before our defeat at Bull's Run.

Gen. MCCLELLAN has not yet formally assumed command of the army of the Potomac. He is organizing his staff and preparing for active operations.

DISPATCH TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.

WASHINGTON, Saturday, July 27.

A report has reached here that two cavalry men while accompanying a Union lady to her home outside of Alexandria, were seized by a body of Secessionists near the Theological Seminary, about a mile and a-half west of Fort Ellsworth, and carried off. The lady was allowed to return.

Mclellan was one of the finest training officers in the history of the US Army. However, being a good trainer doesn’t translate into being a good battlefield commander.

That's right. Just take the case of Capt. Sobel as another example.

Ol’ Herbert came instantly to my mind, also.

McClellan was also the designer of the one piece of equipment that has seen the longest continuous issue in the US military inventory. The McClellan saddle was officially adopted in 1859 and (with some modification) remained in use until the end of horse cavalry and horse drawn artillery units during WWII. It has remained in use with ceremonial mounted units to this day.

The USMC officer's Mameluke Sword was first adopted (officially) in 1825, but was dropped from the uniform for a period between 1859–1875 before again becoming part of the uniform.

I was thinking of Sobel as well. I’m not sure Dick Winters could’ve done as well training Easy Company. Sobel would’ve done better if he were promoted and given command of a training Battalion at Benning.
