According to Smith’s footnote #106 below, Lincoln submitted Grant’s name to the Senate for promotion to BG yesterday, and that was noted in the NY Times today, August 1. Search as I might, I could not find that mention in the NYT. He is mentioned as a colonel in the story “Military Movements in Missouri,” in today’s NYT.

If I was posting regularly from Shelby Foote’s CW Narrative as well as Bruce Catton, I probably would have brought the story of the campaign in New Mexico. Foote covers it in some detail. Unfortunately, he didn’t give dates much, and tended to skip back and forth in time, which would make it hard for me to use excerpts in a sensible way.
