In just four months, high-doses of vitamin D reduce arterial stiffness in young, overweight/obese, vitamin-deficient, but otherwise still healthy African-Americans, researchers say.
Rigid artery walls are an independent predictor of cardiovascular- related disease and death and vitamin D deficiency appears to be a contributor.
In what appears to be the first randomized trial of its kind, they found that arterial stiffness was improved by vitamin D supplementation in a dose-response manner in this population, they write in the journal PLOS ONE.
Participants taking 4,000 international units -- more than six times the daily 600 IUs the Institute of Medicine currently recommends for most adults and children -- received the most benefit.
The dose, now considered the highest, safe upper dose of the vitamin by the Institute of Medicine, reduced arterial stiffness the most and the fastest: 10.4 percent in four months. "It significantly and rapidly reduced stiffness," Raed says.
Two thousand IUs decreased stiffness by 2 percent in that timeframe. At 600 IUs, arterial stiffness actually increased slightly -- .1 percent -- and the placebo group experienced a 2.3 percent increase in arterial stiffness over the timeframe.
The Institute of Medicine currently recommends a daily intake of 800 IUs of vitamin D for those age 70 and older. For adolescents and adults, they recommend 4,000 IUs as the upper daily limit; 2,000 was a previous upper limit.
More than 80 percent of Americans, the majority of whom spend their days indoors, have vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency.

It was in a group of people unlikely to have calcium, due to age.
So it appears Vitamin D helped either with removing soft plaques or with the innate flexibility of the vessels, regardless of plaque formation.
It looks like we definitely need to supplement with more than 600 IUs, which was so little that it increased stiffness.
It is as if encouraging Africans to move to low light northern latitudes is HARMFUL to them....

I suspect vitamin D deficiency is a much bigger problem than previously realized, and not just for black people. I have been taking 2-3000 IU for three years and have not been ill once.
D3, calciferol is the one to take.
For the past 20 years, I’ve had psoriasis with psoriatic plaques on both legs. Everyone told me to take 5-6000 IU daily. It did nothing. 4 months ago I switched to 50,000 IU and my plaques have shrunk by 95% and are nearly gone.

Honestly, that is not that much.
Vitamin D deficiency is also a big risk factor for severe covid.

That seems like an extremely heavy dose. Be careful. Have heard of problems taking too much.
Ironically, vitamin D production from sunlight is actually related to skin color. Are we sure it’s not culture?

Vit D3 is being recognized as more important every day:
Vit D3 helps with chronic urticaria (hives) - dose is 4,000 IU daily. I have this issue - take 5K daily. This usually keeps hives away, but if they do occur, another 10K generally resolves the issue without an antihistamine.
