Locked Up: Mercedes-Benz to Charge for Access to EQS’ Rear-Wheel Steering
The Truth About Cars ^ | July 23, 2021 | Tim Healey

If you want the more-advanced version of the rear-wheel steering system on the Mercedes-Benz EQS, and you live in Germany, prepare to pony up to unlock the software.

It will cost you about $575 a year to get an over-the-air update that will unlock the 10-degree rear-wheel-steering system. Unless you sign up for a three-year subscription, in which case you’ll pay a bit over $1,300, which is a bit of a discount in terms of per-year rate.

So, how soon do they pull an Adobe, and rescind retire the software, totally disabling all extant copies?

It is always nice to really know who owns the vehicle.

The right to repair is a must have feature.

John Deere farm equipment is embroiled in several lawsuits over this right now. They'll sell you the equipment but if it breaks down they have the only diagnostic equipment that can fix it and won't let you have anyone else work on it.

It's a crooked practice that I wish was illegal.

If they could harness the wind off his arms they could charge 2/3 of the electric cars in California every 15 minutes!

Or slow down the response time, so you think you need a new car?

“I can’t tell you how many pieces of electronic video gear from the 1990s had this same business model.”

an ancient trick ... back in the day, IBM used step pulleys to drive their card sorters, and expensive speed upgrades involved nothing more than service techs opening the drive cover and moving the drive belt over one or more steps depending on how much speed you paid for ...

That way, I don't have to wait for lights to cross oncoming traffic. 🚘

Maybe I can save a few bucks by skipping the left turn indicators, too!

It doesn’t matter. In five years all automobiles will be “Lease Only”.

#22 I have read complaints that people who “OWN” the older Adobe software cannot reinstall on a pc if they need to. Adobe won’t approve the license. But if you “RENT” the new software then they can help you....

I use to use Dreamweaver CS6 for creating webpages then then newer software came along and it was only rent-able plus had not really improved but made more difficult to use with really small buttons.
No way was I going to pay $21/month. https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/plans.html Yet another bill.

I now use HTMLPad 2020 for $40. Once you learn the basics it is easy and quick to lay out a webpage. https://www.htmlpad.net
Photoshop has may competitors for what people use the most.

You’re right about PS; they would not approve the license for my CS6, when I upgraded to a new computer.

However, what really frosted me, and what I was referencing, was their total shutdown of Flash player last December.

For example, what NOAA had to replace it with for their local sat-rad website maps is worse then laughable.

Less control, less functionality, and worse rendering.

HTMLPad 2020 forced me to “learn code”.... : )

It was easy after many frustrating attempts and posting to the Dreamweaver forum ad searching on the internet for answers on some how to’s.

I do not tell them I use HTMLPad 2020 but Dreamweaver CS6 if they ask. You get some helpful answers there. One lady there is cranky but does help.
