Rodney Alcala, a convicted serial killer who was on California's death row, has died, authorities said Saturday.
Alcala, 77, died of natural causes at 1:43 a.m. Saturday at a hospital in the community near Corcoran State Prison, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.
Alcala was known as "The Dating Game" killer for his appearance as a winning contestant on the television game show in 1978.
After representing himself in Orange County court, he was sentenced to death in 2010 for the 1979 murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe and the murders of four other women -- 18-year-old Jill Barcomb and 27-year-old Georgia Wixted, both in 1977; 32-year-old Charlotte Lamb in 1978; and 21-year-old Jill Parenteau in 1979.
He was previously sentenced to death twice for the murder of Samsoe -- in 1980 and then again in 1986 -- though those sentences were later overturned in appeals and he was granted new trials.
Alcala also pleaded guilty to the murders of two other women in New York -- Cornelia Crilley in 1971 and Ellen Jane Hover in 1977. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in 2013.
He has been linked to or suspected of murders in other states. In 2016, he was charged by Wyoming prosecutors with the murder of 28-year-old Christine Ruth Thornton, who disappeared in 1978 when she was six months pregnant and whose body was found four years later, though authorities ultimately decided not to extradite him to Wyoming for trial due to his failing health.

Why would anyone want to harm some corn flakes?
He’s on death row for 41 years? Why even have a death penalty? Sorry, needs to be changed to 2 trials. The second trial is held 60 days after the first one If the outcme of the 2nd trial is the same as the first, 90 min appeal to the govenor. If he doesn’t override it, take him out to the prison yard and give him 5 mins to make peace, then a hollowpoint to the head. Done. Screw the ACLU!
Not even reasonable. Often evidence is suppressed for years by the prosecutor’s office. Unless the second trial is in another county with a prosecutor from a different party from the first, this is a total non-starter. There should also be a reasonable length of time between the two trials so public pressure is no longer a factor. There was a very recent trial where a man was convicted simply because of the mob, so there is that too.
There are a LOT of folks in jail who are there only because of over-charging and plea deals, and your quick bullet to the head wouldn’t help that one bit.
No worries, he will still vote Democrat in the 2022 midterms and 2024 presidential election..
It is absurd.
Some “conservative” or libertarians decry the death penalty as ineffective.
They are wrong. It’s the OPERATIONAL APPROACH that is ineffective.
Timeliness matters in punishment. If the perp goes on able to appeal again and again, and the execution is strung out for years anyway, it loses its sting. In all that time, besides, the perp might even escape! Never mind win appeal.
It wasn’t just the death penalty that was highly effective in preventing crime, it was the TIMELINESS of it.
This POS pleaded guilty - that’s good enough for me to stretch his neck on a gallows.
and your quick bullet to the head wouldn’t help that one bit.
Really? Then you pay for his 40 year room and board. My solution costs a buck!
“ Why would anyone want to harm some corn flakes?”
It happens when we are living in a cereal world, he was just a cheerio girl
Incidentally, the woman who chose Alcala on that Dating Game episode, decided not to go out with him on their “dream date”. Smart girl.
I’m glad he rotted in a cell for decades before he finally kicked the bucket. He was extremely bad news, and being put to sleep on a cushioned gurney would have been way too good after what he did.
Yeah, he creeped her out when they met face-to-face backstage.
Why do these serial killers never concentrate on whacking lefty politicians and bureaucrats? They’d be doing society a service.
Still, she had a close call. How creepy would it have been when she found out he was a killer?
Some mysteries will never be solved I guess.
Maybe something about evil serving and protecting evil. That’s the best I can come up with.
Yeah, and he killed three women in fairly rapid succession after the Dating Game fiasco.
Note that his conviction was twice overturned on appeal.
Also,
“In 1978, Alcala — who had by then already killed at least two women — was accepted as a contestant on The Dating Game, despite being a convicted rapist and registered sex offender.”
California has been truly disgusting for a long time.
And when the suppressed evidence proves him innocent, I fully expect you to donate your entire estate to support his family, then I’ll supply the bullet for the back of your head.
If you're good-looking and a good BS artist, you can get away with pretty much anything. That goes double in California.
Goes for both men and women.
