The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Well, the ‘storm to end all storms’ turned out to be a big NOTHINGBURGER!
No wind, some below average thunder and lightening, but a full INCH of much-needed rain! I didn’t hear a thing; slept right through what was supposedly going to murder me in my sleep. ;)
Beau left on time for a change, yesterday, so all he hit was some rain. Beau, dogs, truck, trailer and my ATV made it home safely. :)
Just unpacked the greenhouse and put all my pretty stuff back out where it belongs. Both of the cats stayed out last night, so I should’ve trusted THEIR instincts over Mr. Weatherman.
Nothing on local news about damage, though it’s the Northeast’s turn in the barrel, today. The media is already unnerving them.

Re: Coffee. I made my first batch of cold brew last week. Loved it. I can see why my sister raves about it. Very smooth and delicious. Nice for drinking cold on these awful hot & humid summer days. :)
The little bulbs called, ‘Bulbils’ don’t have to go in more than an inch, spaced an inch apart, pointy side up, but that really doesn’t matter. I would plant them in a separate space, because it’ll take a few years for them to develop into decent heads. Cover with 4” or so of straw. Next spring when you see growth, pull back the straw so things don’t rot. Let them grow all season and dig a few in the fall to see what size they are. They won’t be big, of course. Cover them back up and let them go another season, or use the smaller, basically FREE garlic as you normally would.
I’ve never planted garlic from the seeds. Let’s ask the expert if he’s available! :)

Several years ago a friend served us peach iced tea with orange slices in it. It was amazing. I get the Crystal Light Peach Iced Tea. If I have an orange I will use one in a half gallon of tea. I slice but remove the peel which can give a bitter taste. In the winter when oranges are pricey I make the tea and add a few spoonfuls of Orchard Lake (or other good looking brand ) of frozen OJ concentrate. Tastes just as good.
I started with this packaged mix (10 oz) of raw shredded Brussels Sprouts, Napa Cabbage, Kohlrabi, Broccoli, Carrots and Kale:
I added, more Broccoli, more Kale and more Carrots, as I had them on hand and in the garden. I also added chopped Bacon, a handful of Raisins and a handful of roasted, unsalted Pepitas (Pumpkin Seeds) but Sunflower seeds would be fine, too.
I then made this dressing for the salad:
1 Cup Mayo
3 Tbsp. Sugar
2 & 1/2 Tbsp. Lemon Juice
2 Tbsp. White Vinegar
Salt & Pepper
Whisk all ingredients together until smooth.
It was delicious, and we'll have it again for lunch with a scoop of Chicken Salad in the middle. It's basically a fancy Cole Slaw with more nutrition packed into it.
That’s a great idea! For a while Chrystal Lite had Appletini and Cosmos flavors. I LOVED them - not sure why I can’t find them anymore.
People probably thought they were buying dehydrated booze and complained, LOL!
You really know how to make veggie lovers happy.
Great recipe.
Mmmmmmmmm.............Cold brew is the best.
I’m just trying to lost weight, LOL!
Me too, down 21 pounds since March 5. Low carb and the garden has saved me.
Ou new neighbor spent two days replacing @ relocating two shut off values to our garden and lawn. He has a little wheeled tractor with front bucket and Backhoe.

the peppers survived but died when I put them in the "hot" house thinking the weather would be okay in April but we got a bad frost....down went the peppers...
but this year, I am going to overwinter several plants...
nice.....a such a interesting carrier...
Very nice! I love that carrier!
If I had a carrier like that, I might turn it into a fairy garden, though. I’m prone to repurposing containers.
I always am so hopeful at the beginning, and things usually go very well for the first 6 weeks. Then the winter drags on, and I just barely make it through to late April when I can bring out the hardier plants to acclimate.
My husband has requested that I not use the dining room again this year, so I will have to be pickier and more creative in my overwinter space. Sometimes I wonder if I should stop doing so many. It does get a little overwhelming, but I love my plants so much, and I’m so happy when they make it through another season.
