Weekly Garden Thread - July 24-30, 2021 [Garden Party Edition]
July 24, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 07/24/2021 5:52:57 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Well, that’s more than interesting! We had a full moon last night so moonlight will be very bright for some nights yet - I may have to do some feeder observation. I don’t mind if bats are getting nectar or if it’s just more hungry hummers, but the feeders are emptying noticeably quicker!

happy birthday...so wonderful you still have parties, our little jagdterrier treed a small bear the other day off a pasture in some woods. This was on our farm but outside of our electric fence. Still scared to death pulling dogs off a bear tree. We had a few times a bear came down while removing dogs from the tree. Missouri has a bear season now but NO dogs. Our blackmouth and kemmer stock curs have yet to tree a bear...great fun... im way older than YOU

I LOVE your plumerias! I was given a yellow one by my brother in law, and have had it bloom only a few times. I need to fertilize it here because it just needs that extra oomph because of my location. So the blossoms are developing still and I hope to have one of them open in the next few weeks. They seem to open one at a time and never all at once like yours is doing.

I used my Seek app to identify your unknown. It said it is an oakleaf hydrangea. Very helpful app.

I have one monarch caterpillar on one of my many milkweed plants right now. To me this is a little early, but it is almost August. That’s usually when I see them. Hopefully there will be more in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the ping. I was up all most all night with that insomnia thing. Finally got some sleep and just now drinking my second cup of coffee.

I think I’m gonna be extra lazy today. I’ll have to water some potted plants, but I’m taking the day off otherwise.

Beau is up at our cabin training dogs this week for Black Bear. They treed a 300# male, yesterday! No shooting, yet; season doesn’t open for them until October, but you can run and train dogs.

I raise and he runs Treeing Walker Coon Hounds and Plott Hounds. Right now I am raising an English Coon Hound and a Plott. They’re so CUTE, but I’m always glad to see them grow up and move to the kennels and OFF of my front porch! So are my cats, which they consider ‘Training Raccoons.’ ;)

We don’t have much this year. Hubby was too busy to do much planting. What little I planted just hasn’t done much good.

For the first year ever, I only got about half of the garlic crop I should have and ditto for the potatoes. I did have a nice batch of lettuce this spring though.

I love the lemons we get off our little tree. We usually have ripe ones by Christmas. And give one to our kids and grandkids with a few left over for us.

I’m on the other side of 70, and almost halfway to 80. Hoping to make it and still be able to remain active.

🤣Well-earned? I dunno about that. I tend to be lazy since retiring, but some days are lazier than others.

After decades of taking a break on Saturdays, before getting ready for the next work week, it’s kinda like a habit.

Far East of Eden: Couple transform their £240,000 Yorkshire new-build home into tropical paradise with plants from their travels in Thailand and Sri Lanka

Chris Ensell, 32, and wife, Anneka, 31, brought Southeast Asia back home to Ackworth, West Yorkshire

The newlyweds drew inspiration from their honeymoon in Sri Lanka and the Jim Thompson House in Bangkok

Chris estimated he has up to 300 variations of plants and has spent around £4,000 on tropical plants

He and Anneka completed the entire garden transformation themselves to help keep the price of the renovation project down

Hoping to make it and still be able to remain active.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My dad is 98-1/2 with advanced heart failure. I am shocked how active he still is - the only thing holding him back the most is not his heart, but his knees which have all but given out (not a candidate for knee replacement & he’s had about everything they can do for him short of replacement). Lack of mobility is what is going to be his “undoing”. He has a golf cart for around the farm - his brain gets plenty of activity figuring out how to do what he wants to do from his golf cart! Remaining active is one of the keys to a good quality of life in addition to longer life - best wishes to you for both, at 80 & beyond! ~Q

Hubby’s mom was in her ninety’s and though she had a cane to help her periodically, it was mostly carried rather than used, and she could walk circles around me.

She did limit her self to just one garden in her 80s, and then cut back to potted tomato plants etc. around the deck in her last years.

Thanks for that link. Beautiful pictures. I’m not very good at designing outdoor spaces, but I love to look at pictures like that.

Good luck with your plumerias! Feeding them is very important and protecting them from cold weather. Mine were grown from 4-6" cuttings given to me 20 or so years ago.

My Purple Jack is just coming into bloom. I'll post a photo of it next week.
