The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Looks great! Would you please add me to the ping list? Thank you.
You’re doing great! That’s waaaaay more than I’ve lost, and I’ve been working on losing since January. I hate plateaus, but I can’t give up.
We’re low carbing it, too. I’ve shed a few pounds. With the amount of trips back and forth to the barn, all the gardening, mowing and landscape work and chasing after two puppies I should be a Skinny Minnie, but age and a slower metabolism have both caught up with me.
Part of my problem is that I’m not on my feet for 10 hours a day, as I was when I was working at the garden center. That, and the fact that I have this HUGE farmer-man to feed 3x a day, so meals are always being prepared, cooked, shopped for or planned. It’s been fun finding recipes for things we normally eat, only lighter. I’ve had some good successes so far!
Thanks! I never think of Amazon for food-related stuff!
Nice harvest by Lady Bender! :)
I added you! :)
*** age and a slower metabolism have both caught up with me.***
You (DiW) and I are the same age though I’m a few months ahead of you. I am trying to be patient with my weight loss program. They say if I do it slowly it will stay off longer and is better for my health.
Once CoVid hit and I gained 12 pounds in less than a year, I decided I had to get smarter about how I eat. I’ve always cooked from scratch for the most part, with a few processed foods mixed in for convenience. I love fruits and vegetables of nearly every kind, and most meats and seafood. Fortunately, I’m not allergic to much, just melons, which I LOVE, but God has instructed my body to have fits when I eat them, so I can’t anymore. :-(
I need to up my exercise routine. Besides gardening, outdoor chores, and housework, we almost take a walk at the end of the work day before dinner as a transition to evening. Still, my doctor wants me to have more weight-bearing exercise, so I’m trying out new routines here and there with some success. I just haven’t been able to make it part of my day often enough, so that’s what I need to focus on now. My BMI is back in the right place, so I know these last few pounds towards my goal will be stubborn.
Beautiul!! Plus I love that basket.
I try to keep to 20g carbs or less a day. Two words fit me - insulin resistance. I am good with discipline, I weigh myself every day, record it, and every now and then check my morning blood sugar. A1C was 6.5 in February, I’ll be getting it checked in a couple of weeks. I also need the visual so I made a progress bar chart of my goal and then fill it in green as my weight goes down, kind of like a reverse fund raising thermometer chart. Works for me. I crave protein like crazy and supplement with protein shakes on the days I intermittently fast.
When my weight stays the same for a week or more I do an intermittent fast and that works. You are getting a lot of exercise! I can’t go out walking, rocky dirt road plus we are on a hill.
For those who like that basket, I did some looking, they are called garden hods. Searching for “garden hod harvesting basket” will get you some hits, especially if you look at images. Pricey some 125.00 and not made of all metal. Wood handles and sides. That is a vintage basket you’ve got there. Could not even find an image of one all metal in my search. I’ve got 4 or 5 of those plastic hand held carriers like Diane posted with her potatoes. They work too.
I haven’t tried intermittent fasting yet. How do you do yours? There seems to be a whole bunch of ways.
Thanks for the research. Now I will look. I’m very intrigued with that basket, but I am also a cheapskate when it comes to fairy garden containers. I don’t think I’ve spent more than $10 on small ones, and more than $25 on the bigger ones. That one would qualify as small for me.
I just don’t eat for a day, drink as much water as I can (and I hate drinking water), and have 3 Ensure Max Protein shakes (30 g protein each). After being on low carb for a length of time (March 5) carb craving stopped and protein craving kicked in. I just don’t get very hungry anymore.
I love that basket but realistically produce comes in the house for cleaning and a wire basket would shed a lot of dirt. Those plastic carry alls also work great for taking seedlings down for planting.
Cravings have stopped for me too, unless I get a lot of yard work in and it’s terribly hot. Then I do have to eat something and usually opt for a spoonful of almond butter or a cheese stick. Fainting not allowed. I know the weight will come off at some point, and I’m determined to get stronger. I’m tired of flabby arms and a soft belly. It may take me a while, but I want to get to where I’m not embarrassed to be seen in a bathing suit again. I’m too young to not try to get there.
Sounds like the intermittent fasting would work for you too. Protein help us lose weight, I do recommend the Max Protein 30 g ones. On the days I just do shakes I have way more energy. I would probably drink more of them but they are not cheap.
Does anyone else here make fairy gardens? I’m sort of a newbie to the gardening threads.
I will try that, thanks.
“I’ve got 4 or 5 of those plastic hand held carriers like Diane posted with her potatoes. They work too.”
I think you were the one that gave me the heads up on those. Found it at Dollar Tree for a buck - I plan on getting a few more. Very handy.
Whenever I see a sturdy basket at a thrift store, I grab those, too. I end up with a LOT of veggies all at once, and they look so pretty in baskets all around the kitchen. I find that the thicker willow baskets work best for me, with a handle.
That basket of potatoes from last week is still sitting on the kitchen floor, right where I left it. ;)
