New York State alone has thousands of places, parks, geographical features, towns, counties, and cities named after Indian tribes. I was always amazed that there were so many places named after the tribes given the ferocity and sheer brutality of colonial Indian warfare. I wondered why people would honor their enemies so. One would think that the enmity would be so strong that there would be no places named for Indians.
