Silicon Valley’s Cynical Treatment of Asian Engineers
Quillette ^ | 07/21/2021 | Kenny Xu

Silicon Valley runs on Asians. This is a well-known aspect of the tech world in general, but it’s especially apparent in elite sub-sectors. Even by 2010, Asian Americans already had become a majority (50.1 percent) of all tech workers in the Bay Area: software engineers, data engineers, programmers, systems analysts, admins, and developers. Census Bureau statistics from the same year put white tech workers at 40.1 percent. Other races made up, in total, slightly less than 10 percent.

I interviewed a Facebook product manager fresh out of university. He interacts daily with teams of software engineers at Facebook, coordinating and leading projects, and getting them in line. Among the four teams of five or so software engineers he works with on a daily basis, he told me, 15 out of the 20 are Chinese. “I don’t mean Chinese-American,” he clarified. “I mean Chinese-Chinese, like from China.” These Chinese engineers largely speak Mandarin during work, making the company billions as they write code with machine-gun efficiency. Or, as he puts it: “We’re at an American social media company surrounded by Chinese [speaking people].” (In case you were wondering about the other five out of the 20, they were Asian American. “I think I might see one or two white software engineers here and there,” he added. “Not a single black or Hispanic [engineer].”)

Where else in America, besides NBA basketball maybe, are you going to find an elite field so dominated by one minority race?

Once Asians become managers/leads there, that’s primarily who they hire: other Asians. This is especially true in the IT positions. They will interview “others” just to give the appearances of being fair.

China is doing to America with technology, what they just did with virology.

Everything goes “home” as fast as it can get on a USB stick. None of it is used for good.

The standard deal for brilliant Chinese (and other foreign students) PhD students back in the day was a company would get them an HB1 visa and pay them about half (or less) the going rate for an an American citizen and work them to death for the three to five years it took them to get a standard green card.

Silicone Valley was built on the backs of these high tech indentured servants

Many of the alums of this system are the founders of high tech startups or have high level positions in major big tech companies.

Silicon valley runs on Asians because of Asian ethnic gangsterism.

There’s plenty of white American software engineers, and since they were the people who invented the whole damn thing they can sure as hell do the work.

Santa Clara valley used to be full of white American SW engineers. They were pushed out by two factors: 1, low cost H1B visas. 2, affirmative action. Companies hiring Chinese/Indians (South Asians) get points for doing that and become eligible for federal contracts...as long as they discriminate against white people.

Everyone knows the Asians do rotgut boring code. Creativity ain’t part of the curriculum in their society. So it’s the other factors that gets them in.

Just a little comment. Nobody in the US military died in any of the wars to make the US safe for a bunch of racists from East Asia to show up and take over what was the nicest part of the US. Make the draft real again and we’ll see how many of them really want to be here.

This is especially true with Indians. Despite having a veneer of “politeness”, Indians might be the most racist and arrogant people I know.

There are three factions at Intel which fight for power.
Chinese
Indian
Mormon

All three operate exactly the same.
If you want a promotion or a key assignment, you better be part of our group.

Mormon is very strong in Portland.

Please note that while SillyCon Valley employs a good number of Asian-Americans, the corporations far prefer foreign (non-USA citizen) Asians, especially from Communist China (engineering) and India (Programming).

The Asian-Americans generally still have pretty good work habits but the foreign Asians the corporations import provide two added advantages — lower wages and more corporate control (by virtue of the firms’ continuous threats to fire them — in which event they would be obligated to return to Communist China and not with honor there, either).

it has been called “slave labor” though, of course, it is a a bit softer than that, maybe call it “slave labor with a velvet glove”

Meanwhile, these same mostly-”American” corporations have been known to refuse even the courtesy of 10 minute hiring interviews to highly-qualified USA citizen engineers and programmers (we know one that was right at the top of the class in the best technical school in America, but could not even get a courtesy reply to repeated applications and inquiries with the largest and most prominent Palo Alto engineering company).

Chinese citizens cannot be trusted. Those with relatives in China cannot be trusted.

I have a computer science degree from an accredited private university. I went to school with and got better grades than many Microsoft software engineers.
If I decided to re-enter the work force nobody would hire me.
I’m white and too experienced, in other words I won’t allow them to work me to death, been there done that.
There are actually very few guys that do software design.
Vast majority of “Coders” are people that type fast and make my design come to life.
Much like most jobs they will be automated out of existence in a very few short years.

How old are you? There is more of an age bias than a race bias in silicon valley. And really it is a bias for cheap labor, which is why foreigners and recent grads are preferred.

That’s simply not true, but I guess you will say stuff you know nothing about, like any other Democrat.

By the way, Asians are not considered diversity hire in engineering. Black engineers, Hispanic engineers, female engineers, are considered diversity hires. If you are Asian, it’s considered just like being white.

They always hire down-caste with all that entails. It's a virtual slave empire.

I agree about the age bias.

Many startups in Silicon Valley don't want to hire H1-Bs, because they are too expensive, and too much work. What most people don't realize is It costs the company $20k+ in legal fees to get that H1-B. And once the company sponsors an H1-B, they can jump ship and take it to another company.

Now, people who are on L-1 Visa, they can't just leave, they have to find a company that will sponsor them. But for a company to bring an L-1 worker to the U.S., they have to work for that company for a year outside the U.S.

The majority of H1-Bs who are underpaid are ones who are working for an employer who farms them out as a contractor to other companies, by a vendor who specializes in this. They work for another Indian guy, and I'm not sure why they don't seem willing to leave. Or they work for some other kind of chop shop. H1-Bs who work for FANG companies, or well-funded startups make a lot of money, and are paid competitively.
