The Delta variant is here. It's now responsible for the majority of COVID-19 infections in the United States and is driving a rapid rise in cases, not only in red states like Arkansas but in true blue New York City.
But while the Delta variant is much more contagious than either the original strain or the Alpha variant that first appeared in Britain, and has shown greater ability to infect vaccinated individuals, all the vaccines approved for use in the United States have so far proven highly effective in preventing severe disease and death.
So it's understandably maddening that much of the American right has decided this is the time to double down on making opposition to vaccination a central front in our endless culture war.
It's maddening — but it is essential not to take the bait. The fact that vaccines have become a focal point at all should be the final proof that the culture war is a self-sustaining process largely untethered from substantive grievances. Republicans believe that on balance fighting helps them politically, and I suspect they are right. But it's not a war that either side can actually win by fighting, even though individual politicians and media stars can advance their own particular fortunes. For the country as a whole, the only way to win is not to play.

“As to the Indian variant being noticed more, well so bloody what? IF it still has an insignificant death rate so what?”
As a former employee in a major North East medical Center I had that Chicom virus in late February and I didn’t know I had a virus at the time.Since It wasn’t know that There was a ChiCom virus in the environment yet.
As a result I refuse to take any manufactured mRNA “vaccines” since I have NO idea what is in them or what the vital statistics regarding cure rate, side effects, death rates etc. have been blocked at the insistence of the Biden Administration.
There is No way a person can make a knowing decision to take that crap without that information.
I’ll take my chances with my natural immunity. I’m not authorizing the Federal Government and Big Pharma to kill me.
You’re correct there. Generally now libs here are sheep and ready to take it as they still wear masks…and we are highly Blue here. But there are many who don’t because it’s Trump or they were anti-vax to start with.
Although the Delta version may be more contagious than earlier versions, I have yet to read that it is more life threatening. Rather, my understanding is that the symptoms are more like the common cold with relatively few life-threatening complications.
Lambda was supposedly in South America. Can’t recall if Colombia or Venezuela or what. Some weeks ago same time they really spazzed on delta. So seems it’s buried in the news.
I know hundreds of people, of all political stripes, who have been vaccinated. They are still very alive and suffered only mild, flu-like symptoms, at most. I also know four people who refuse to get vaccinated. They are all libtards.
Yahoo “news” is a charter member of the crisis of the week club.
How can anything coming from something called "Yahoo" be taken seriously.
This is another of those "hospital capacity is being overtaxed" and the "body bags are stacking up in the alleyways" because so many people are testing positive and dying from the Delta virus variant that the medical community can't keep ahead of the curve.
So here is the government's plan: "Let's make everybody wear masks and lockdown in their homes for two weeks to flatten the curve".
Wash, rinse and recycle the whole affair all over again. It didn't work the first time around so let's double down and do the same thing again.
This is not even funny even though it is.
With apologies to Oscar Wilde,
“One must have a heart of stone to read the spread of Delta without laughing.”
The only requirement s needed to work at yahoo is to have not an honest bone In one’s body, no sense of shame whatsoever, and a compete Inability to tell fact from fiction, oh, and to be one of the most miserable people ever and a willingness to ruin anyone’s enjoyment of life at the drop of a hat
It's an opinion column, so it's supposed to be biased.
It's an idiotic opinion, but it's in the correct section of the newspaper.
My funeral now? Whatever happened to it was to protect the elderly and flatten the curve and whatever else.
All true. But the viruses you mentioned, and I’d include HIV in that too, seem to require a large concentration of fluid to transmit. Not tiny airborne droplets from the respiratory tract.
But I am no virologist I am just a stand-in for the movie production that plays out on the internet.
What?...are you asking important questions? You will NEVER be a rich and famous reporter in the national media. Go learn how to pretend to be reporting important issues, while casually mentioning democommiecrat talking points.

Sera from convalescent patients collected up to 12 months post symptoms were 4 fold less potent against variant Delta, relative to variant Alpha (B.1.1.7). Sera from individuals having received one dose of Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines barely inhibited variant Delta. Administration of two doses generated a neutralizing response in 95% of individuals, with titers 3 to 5 fold lower against Delta than Alpha.
...by design?
Just based on what appears here...I have absolutely no idea what he’s talking about.
It’s wishy washy garbage.
